The L1 point is between the sun and earth, so this satellite always sees the sun part of the earth.
The moon is very far away from earth, and you can only see it a few times.
One of the famous image (or movie) of the Moon in front of the Earth is from this satellite.

Don't you know that the top secret space base is on the dark side of the Earth? ;-)

Duh!!! Yes, it's right there in the title.

I was thinking L1 Earth-Moon. (I got too excited about seeing the L1 and thinking about my story.)

L1 Sun-Earth makes it much simpler for the lighting.

I know there are other things out there at that L1 too, such as solar imaging, early solar storm detectors, etc.
