I disagree this is a new narrative. For years a lot of very smart people have seen the decline of China coming.

Between the aging population, complete disregard for the environment, the insane housing market they have and the constant distortion/lieing/manipulation of their economy this was predicted well over a decade ago. The only really question was when would this massive house of cards comes crashing down.

“Every lie we tell incurs a debt to the truth. Sooner or later, that debt is paid.”

“Our power comes from the perception of our power.”

Nonetheless it's how the deep state talks to itself. If an article appears, it's a signal to the rest of organism about how to behave. Likewise The Atlantic, FP, etc.

China couldn't live up to the big baddie billing.

That's the problem the USA always has with it's rivals, they always destroy themselves before any kind of real conflict can kick off because the American system is simply superior to anything else so far.

American system superior? No way that's in your list of ideas to promote. You demoralize and distract.

Until they stop seeing a superior host body. The question is have they identified that China is no longer the host they hoped it would be or is China going according to plan? Perhaps their god is angry with them serving evil again (as they always do).

The NYT isn't fit to line a birdcage.

China is giving us a sneak preview of how the US and EU economies are crashing.
