The natives of South America, e.g. the Inca and Aztec empires, and dozens of other nations and tribes.

Well, mostly it wasn't the Spanish personally. It was the smallpox the Spanish brought with them. Within a few years, 90% of everyone who had lived in South America was dead. Which left plenty of room for colonization.
