There's tons of backdoor possibilities in our China made hardware. Our US hardware distributors, likely have a assembly line of people popping off the known Chinese spy chips, and replacing them with US spy chips. Seriously, though, any more, you don't need an actual chip change. You just flash the firmware of one on the board with your backdoor-ed version.

Yet, the Android system you get on consumer smart phones isn't the open source version at all.
