The propaganda of the day was claiming that Gaddafi was dropping bombs on his own people, Russia and China stepped in to say their spy satellites showed no evidence of bombs being dropped.

I don't know anything about Al-Qaida shooting down passenger planes but it wouldn't surprise me since they were continually using US weaponry. The US has a habit of abandoning millions of dollars worth of equipment in places like Afghanistan, or 'accidentally' airdropping crates of weapons into enemy hands. Almost as if they had an agenda, like making sure the gold Dinar didn't collapse the Dollar.
