My bottom line, however, remains intact: Ashkenazi Jews — and all ethnic Jews able to pass as white — are people of color, and unless one excludes Middle Easterners as a whole from this tent, there is no conceivable case for singling out Jews that does not ultimately rest on anti-Semitic theories or double standards.

I have a cousin who is a quarter Ashkenazi. She doesn't look Jewish or middle eastern, she looks Polish. I literally worked with a Polish girl who could have been her twin. A lot of mixing and inter-breeding happened in the East and people often decided their ethnicity on the basis of the religion they followed rather than their heritage. There's a reason Yiddish is nothing like Hebrew. The Ashkenazi even have their own genes which aren't like either other Jews or Europeans. That's where the cystic fibrosis mutation comes from.

Perhaps, but I can see why African-Americans think they are not. Even liberal non-anti-semites like Whoopi Goldberg don't view Jews as people of color.

They see people who look white, and have even more social and economic privilege than the 'other whites'.

In terms of being visibly non-white, they are not of color. In terms of privilege, they are NOT in the same boat as the African-Americans and other people of color despite what the New York Times may be writing. They are only non-white in a purely genetic sense that their DNA is roughly 1/2 middle eastern, but not in any of the ways that actually matter socially.

I was in Mexico once and this American starts talking in English to some "white person" and gets absolutely flabbergasted when this "white person" refuses to speak English and responds in Spanish only, and offended when this "white person" gets annoyed that some American tourist is just assuming everyone speaks English.

This "white person" was Mexican. And I found the entire exchange hilarious. Tourist comes over to complain to me and I'm just like "you know Spain colonized mexico right?       Black is actually the absence of color if we wish to be pedantic. But if we are going to do that, we can say with accuracy that neither of us have seen anyone with either black or white skin because there's only one skin color, it's a kind of brown, and people either just have more or less of it.

      Some people have none, which is what we would call an albino, and it looks quite jarring. And black people can be albino as well, so it's perfectly reasonable to say that some black people have whiter skin than white people.

      It's actually crazy how much Ashkenazi Jews have changed their looks over the last 100 year.

      I have a photo of my Nan's class at school which was 50% Jewish and the Jewish kids look so different to the English kids they actually look closer to Indians.

      I think something people don't get when they think about the history of antisemitism is that in the past Jewish people didn't look white, they were clearly different and people reacted on that basis not just religious differences.
