I don't think it's hypnosis so much as it is a combination of division of labor and most people just being too busy to really dig in to the news they consume.

People rely on the "tv-people" and news pundits to be domain experts on informing them about important events. And unless the pundits tell them something they can easily verify to be true first-hand, they'll blindly believe them because they have no other reason not to.

Only a few take the time to research news reporting enough to see the consistent misreporting and bias, and then grow to become far more skeptical. The reporting on Trump was so obviously biased, that that even started to wake up a lot of people, but most are still asleep.
