When people said "we'll police our own communities" they didn't mean "we'll start shooting our own people down in the street without justification".

I can see how you'd be confused since that's the only sort of 'policing' you have at the moment, but that's not what the word is supposed to mean.

"without justification" is an exaggeration. He is arguably defending himself in all three cases. We'll see if new information comes to light that proves the existing justification false, but you jump to a hasty and probably dishonest conclusion here.

This is the sensible approach. I lean towards supporting him, but I'm still preferring to see what emerges before I category hold him up as a hero. Right now the evidence leans in his favour, and I'll admit my view is coloured by the supposed victims consisting of a violent child molester, a violent domestic abuser, and a violent political extremist with a conviction for a firearms offence who apparently later expressed regret at not using his illegal handgun to kill the kid.

Even if it's ruled self-defense and all charges dropped, I don't think we should consider him a hero. He's a stupid kid who was trying to play GI Joe and valued property over his own life and the lives of others. This flavor of gungho firearms ownership is not something we should be encouraging.

Tell that to the cops - or better to their superiors who don't properly train them in deescalation tactics nation wide but instead buy them virtual tanks to wage a stupid drug/terrorist/covid war.

Bring back the friendly neighbourhood police man.

Could be he was. I suppose we'll have to see what comes out of the investigation.
