Why were people in the middle ages fatter than people 50 years ago?

If you look at film and photos of the general public between 1920-1970 literally 99% of people are properly skinny.

If you look at older art that is not the case

Well, more modest meal sizes in different decades and different food availability. Modern times have processed foods and gluttony. For most of history, people have been far worse off that they are now, so poverty too.

It's just fads and trends for the wealthy. If you go to a small little tourist town that only rich people can afford to live in, all of the girls look like starving models who are allergic to clothes. 100 years ago, they'd be pudgy and covered up for the same reason.
