Because much of society sucks, and much of the economy sucks.

But the news will talk about this like "There's a new pharma that might help us out!" instead of addressing the systemic social issues that lead people to feel so abandoned and betrayed. Because that might hurt corporate profits.

The media is the problem, because it has created our broken culture. And the economy is the problem, because people aren't even getting along okay in many cases. But when corporations own both those things, what can a society do other than revolt? It's just a matter of how long is it going to take for the masses to figure out the need for revolt (despite the best efforts of the media and economy to pressure them otherwise) and then actually do it.
