Reading between the lines of your source, I would say that the majority of those sexual assaults are probably not what people mean by the usual meaning of the word "rape", i.e. non-consensual violent sexual intercourse by a stranger.

Looking back to the original source of the stats, it looks like about 42% of sexual assaults are by strangers, which is higher than I expected, but still less than a majority. And of course the stats don't distinguish on the severity of the assault. We don't know how many of them are rape and and how many are, say, Biden pawing and sniffing at young girls, or Trump grabbin' women by the pussy 🙁

I also suspect two biases in the numbers:

  • I expect that Native American women are probably a little less likely to report their husband or other family member to the police if they are Native American, giving an undercount of sexual assaults by Native Americans.

  • Looking at the source, the victim is asked what the "race" of the perpetrator was. In many cases you can't tell visually, mixed race native Americans who look pale would be described as white, even if legally and socially the perp was actually native American. So that's another bias in the stats.
