The shooter was 17. If they were transgender they would have been affected by Iowa's law against gender affirming care for people under 18, that was enacted in March.

It will be interesting to see if there's a trend in mass shootings by young transgender people in states with newly minted oppressive laws, that condemn them go through puberty without gender affirming care.

Suicide in a 17 year old without a terminal illness isn't a rational decision. But without gender affirming care, irreversible things would have been happening to them, and it's plausible that that affected their mental state.
Especially if they had been receiving care prior to March.
