I believe it did start in African villages. It is a custom that when a girl reached puberty they would have a party and she would dance, twerk away, all night. In the morning when she was exhausted the elder women of the tribe would splay her out on the ground and perform a circumcision on her with rusty jagged knives. Actually still happens in fact.
