My understanding is that central africans tend to consume a lot of energy in the form of firewood for cooking fuel. It has been argued that this sort of deforestation led to the Sahara desert.

That claim is ridiculous. There is no way there was a population big enough to deforest a forest. If the conditions were not there to create the desert then the forrest would regrow faster than it could be cut down. Furthermore, fresh cut trees are not good firewood. They would most likely be burning dead trees.

Even if they clear cut the forest on an industrial scale with leteral alien technology it would only turn to grassland, not a desert.

At most they could be slightly accelerating the expansion of the desert at the boundary. Very slightly.
