I think a healthy way to promote self-improvement for both individuals and the nation they are a part of is through productive games. Not just the usual sports but with other types of competition. Some people follow the theory that civilization slowly started when man started to experiment with games. I think besides seeking the well-being of the nation, games can be a way for people of different cultures to compete in a healthy fashion.
The extreme individualism of capitalism should serve as a contrast to this. A lot of families lack proper order and don't last long due to people's fear of someone becoming an authority. While different nations do compete with each other through sports most people do this in bad faith. They might be nationalistic when it comes to supporting their side but not when it comes to their own responsibilities.
I think this confusion has been taken advantage of by the Intelligence groups really well, with most people nowadays just following the values of pop culture and mocking the ones who could be even just slightly different. While games can be a way of proving the superiority of your group with others. I think they even have the potential to promote empathy among the different groups.
