The original meaning of the word was a king that took control of the country in an emergency situation. As people started developing a rejection towards authoritarianism, it gained the dark thematic it now has... To me a Monarchy, Caudillism or any other type of authoritarian government is a perfectly valid system. It all depends on the ethics of the ruler.
