I think you might be taking it out of context there, "they were saying: we as individuals and as a group are committing to seek and follow God and if we don’t follow through on this covenant we make with God, we should be put to death."

Deuteronomy 13:13-18 and 6-10

Edit: I am not pretending to know anything about the bible or any other religious text. I just do a bit of reading and come across stuff. I find it strange that one person can translate it one way and someone another. Kind of smells funny that way. Who's to say it isn't translated for nefarious means? Can't give any examples but I bet it has happened.
