This is why you have to pay attention to the laws being passed where you are and not just assume lawmakers will be logical.

And also be aware of how the new laws can be altered to be used against you. The left supported all of these draconian laws, but they'll eventually be used against them too, and maybe, just maybe, they will finally see the light.

If they had the sense to see that, then they wouldn't propose the various things that will eventually be turned on them to begin with. Everything that they do is done in the firm belief that they'll always be the ones in control. See the complete loss of cool when Elon bought Twitter and start dragging shit out into the light for the most prominent current example of this in action.

I'm afraid it is optimism on your part. What's far more likely to happen is that they'll hold up that treatment as "proof" that all of their paranoid fantasies about fascism and the alt-right were true, and that everything that they did was justified as a consequence.

And, like the "it wasn't real Communism" smoothlobes, the obvious solution to their problems isn't to step back and assess what went wrong and why, but instead double down and do even more of what they did as soon as they have power again.
