The entire point of NATO was to check the power of the Soviet Union and prevent it from expanding

I've got some good news for you from a quarter century ago: we won! The USSR literally dissolved!

We could literally have healthcare for everyone, a border wall and a pony for every little girl in America for all the money we've sent to the most corrupt country in Europe. I think cheering for Nazis was the breaking point for many people.

But we're sending the Ukranians to die. We picked one of the most corrupt countries in the world to act as mercenaries, to bleed Russia and keep them hobbled, prevent them from becoming a world player again. We got the bad guys to fight the bad guys.

$80bn seems like a lot, but it's a lot cheaper and less dangerous than the US getting directly involved, and Americans aren't the ones dying.
