With the Real ID act which is finally being implemented, we basically have an internal passport system like Russia. This includes biometric data and while they insist it's not a national ID, it's almost indistinguishable and will be required to fly, enter federal buildings, and probably more in the future once everyone becomes accustomed to it. Depending on your state, you may be able to opt out (for now).
