Could the McCarthy saga be a bipartisan strategy to quietly end aid to Ukraine?

I had this same thought recently and was thinking of making a comment along those lines. Tara Reade has now done me the favour of developing the thought better than I could have.

Btw, neither I nor it seems Tara are saying this is definitely what happened. But it's an interesting angle to contemplate.

Matt Gaetz might be at a special Timcast IRL this Friday.

Gaetz was also on Timcast 8 months ago (after McCarthy had just won the speakership) where he explained what his demands and expectations were for McCarthy in the speakership role The thread is good in establishing how Gaetz has appeared to set an early agenda for a better, more accountable speakership, but it's also a bit annoying in chopping up the video into too many short segments (in my view).

Anyway, here's the thread :

Also, here's Matt Stoller on Gaetz :

My unpopular take is that Matt Gaetz is very smart and motivated by policy aims.

Matt Gaetz is probably the most aggressive R on antitrust and commercial surveillance, and he wants to end arbitration agreements. I've watched him in hearings and markups in my area, the guy knows what he's doing.

And say what you want about the policy aims, but Gaetz successfully stripped out Ukraine money and that has fundamentally changed the geopolitical situation. When was the last time someone meaningfully governed foreign policy from Congress?

Obviously most of Gaetz's policy aims - spending cuts, impeachment, etc - are in my view bad, but they aren't fake. He just doesn't care about the norm fairy.

TIPP editorial: Democrats Doom Continued Ukraine War Funding With McCarthy Vote

In typical Beltway swamp style, Ukraine sympathizers let trial balloons float after that vote that the money would be found after all. Even President Zelenskyy, the clever politician he is, predicted that American support for Ukraine would never waver, indirectly continuing the pressure campaign he had unleashed when he visited Washington a few weeks ago. President Biden, speaking gibberish, let it slip that there even was a "deal" with McCarthy that would reinject all withheld war funding for Ukraine. In her typical style, White House Press Secretary KJP refused to take questions about the "deal," asserting that Biden's words stood on their own.

The media manipulation proved extraordinarily expensive to the Beltway Neocons as the revolt among McCarthy's detractors intensified.

On Wednesday morning, European defense stocks, such as Rheinmetall, Saab, BAE Systems, and Leonardo, slid in the cash market. Bloomberg said this was because of the oustering of McCarthy.

German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall dropped as much as 4.8%.

...

Washington's endless stream of taxpayer funds to Ukraine has benefited the military-industrial complex. Now, it appears that the pipeline of easy money is in question due to the ouster of McCarthy.

Lee Fang :

Matt Gaetz, the House Republican who disavowed lobbyist/PAC donations, gave a rousing speech denouncing establishment corruption and then ousted Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Not many parallels on the left, progressives had bigger numbers but were always deferential to leadership.

Colin Rugg :

Here is Matt Gaetz blasting members of Congress for being owned by “lobbyists and special interests” right before McCarthy was ousted.

“I take no lecture on asking patriotic Americans to weigh in and contribute to this fight from those who would grovel and bend knee for the lobbyists and special interests who own our leadership.”

Gaetz had to speak at the Democrats podium, as the Republicans truculently wouldn't allow him to speak from theirs. Look at the faces of the Dems behind him freeze up, in the video linked above, when Gaetz talks about being owned. (Of course, the Republicans opposite him openly booed him at this point too.)

Agree with what you say about him possibly being a China warhawk, however the rhetoric, the words, stand by themselves, and it is very unwanted and unhelpful to those interests that they were spoken inside the House in a historical speech.

Vacating McCarthy - My analysis:

I stand with Rep @mattgaetz

McCarthy agreed to rules when he was voted in as Speaker that he is not following

Now he gets punished, simple as that

If Gaetz and others don’t hold him accountable, KM will continue to steamroll Republican voters with Uniparty concessions

Yes, I’d prefer to continue investigating the Biden crime family and fight as a unified front against the Democrats, but at a certain point, we have to put our foot down and say “enough is enough”

That time is now

Here’s what I think will happen:

McCarthy will be vacated from the Speaker position and we’ll return to endless rounds of Speaker votes

Do we have an heir apparent? No

I frankly expect McCarthy to be voted back in as Speaker after an extensive public humiliation exercise, but only after more concessions are made to Gaetz and crew

And that’s what why we should all support Gaetz

Democracy is ugly, messy, and uncertain, but real change can only happen when courageous Patriots take a firm stand

Gaetz and crew are the Patriots taking that stand and returning even more power back to the People

The last time the House tried to evict a speaker was 1910, which failed.

Rep. Patrick McHenry is now the acting speaker, as announced by the House Clerk. The next step is for the chamber to begin rounds of voting to elect a new Speaker, as we saw eight months ago.

He's just recessed the House so that the parties can meet and confer on a "way forward." It was quite the tantrum...

ZeroHedge: McCarthy Out Today? House To Vote On Gaetz Motion To Vacate After 'No Deal' Struck With Dems

On Monday night, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) filed a motion to formally remove McCarthy from his role as speaker - a vote for which McCarthy says he'll get out of the way first thing today, while CNBC says the vote should begin at 2pm ET.

According to Fox, Gaetz has at least five confirmed votes:

Reps. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., Eli Crane, R-Ariz., Bob Good, R-Va., and Tim Burchett, R-Tenn.

And that's relevant because:

Jake Sherman

McCarthy: "If 5 Republicans go with Democrats, then i'm out."

McCarthy: "Probably so."

More praise from Due Dissidence:

Just an absolutely massive win for this tiny little Freedom Caucus - or, hmm, "squad," if you will. You see? That's how you wield power. Look at what they were able to do. They were able to cut aid to Ukraine. They were able to throw a wrench in the war machine. You know how hard that is to do? You know how difficult that is to do? Even if it's only for a few weeks... even if this only works for a couple of weeks, just look at what a handful of Republican holdouts did to the military-industrial complex. They actually stopped aid for war. They stopped money for war. I never thought that was possible. I didn't think any politicians could do that... but they did it. It's an amazing thing to have seen.

Yeah, I was just thinking through this earlier today, and I said:

At first I was just like meh, McCarthy and McConnell will sneak something through eventually, the Dems will all help them, this won't end the war... and of course it won't. But Keaton's right. It's kind of amazing that anyone managed to do even this, even if it is just for a couple of weeks. It shows there's a chink in the armor.

Due Dissidence strongly approves of Matt Gaetz's plan:

See, that's talking like a boss. That's how you do it... that's how you bring the ruckus to your party leadership. That's how it's done. He doesn't let up.

Could you imagine AOC saying, "Nancy Pelosi stands for nothing, we're going to file a motion to vacate... the Republicans can have her. I don't want to own her anymore. She's the Republicans' problem, if they want it." He wins either way here.

Russell follows Keaton's praise by discussing the wisdom of the Framers more generally.

This could be interesting. Gaetz and MTG were on opposite sides of the McCarthy tussle in the opening days of the 118th. Gaetz seemed to win at the time, vindicating Jimmy Dore in the process. He and MTG made up quickly, she joined him on his podcast, they made a point of sponsoring each others' bills, and they were both on the same side in this latest internecine fight. He praised her, she thanked him, and they fought McCarthy together, only to be outmaneuvered at the 11th hour by McCarthy's purported deal with Biden.

Will she join him in declaring the Speaker's chair vacant tomorrow?

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene

The majority of the majority does not support haphazardly funding war in Ukraine and it was proven this past week when 117 Republicans voted against a stand alone $300 M to Ukraine.

We elected our Speaker, not the Democrats, and our Speaker should not violate the Hastert Rule.

[–]MeganDelacroix🤡🌎 detainee 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

How it's going:

"We want to move to single-subject spending bills. He made that commitment, he broke it," Gaetz said. "If at this time next week, Kevin McCarthy is still Speaker of the House, it will be because the Democrats bailed him out and he can be their Speaker, not mine."

More at ZeroHedge: McCarthy Hits Back After Gaetz Removal Threat

The move comes after McCarthy reached across the aisle for bipartisan support to pass a Continuing Resolution which will keep the US government operating until mid-November, and then Democrats revealed that McCarthy had struck a side deal to guarantee Ukraine funds at a later date.

Speaking with CNN's "State of the Union," Gaetz said he will file what's known as a motion to vacate.

"I think we need to rip off the Band-Aid," said Gaetz. "I think we need to move on with new leadership that can be trustworthy."

When asked how many Republicans were behind him, Gaetz said he has enough.

Byron Donalds, who has been mentioned as a possible VP for Trump, seems to be one of them.

The source for the UK story causing such a stir is an interview in the Telegraph:

Mr Shapps is clear that his world view has been influenced by how his ancestors fled persecution and pogroms in Eastern Europe to seek a safe haven in the UK. Last week he travelled to Kyiv to hold talks with Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president, where he pledged to continue Britain’s efforts aiding the country’s defence following Vladimir Putin’s brutal invasion.

Over Mr Shapps’s shoulder are several dozen Ukrainian troops in combat uniform being trained in trench warfare by British personnel and those from other allies including Australia.

Along with the noise of the Chinook, the Defence Secretary’s words are punctuated by the cracks of blank rounds being fired yards away. The Ukrainian soldiers are due to be deployed to the front line in less than a month’s time, many for the first time.

Now Mr Shapps is talking to military chiefs about sending British personnel to Ukraine to formally carry out training on their own soil for the first time – a move Nato allies have so far avoided for fear of their troops being fired upon by Russian soldiers, in a move that would create a serious escalation in the war.

Interesting. Who were his ancestors, since he brought them up?

Shapps, who says his Jewish relatives were chased out of Latvia, Poland and Russia several generations ago, described hearing about his Ukrainian guests' experience as "sobering."

Oh.

McConnell then walked out & said R’s will vote no on cloture
