Single-ell "Hilary" is a more common first name than the double-ell "Hillary". I've read that Her Majesty said that her parents named her after Sir Edmund Hillary, the first man (with his Sherpa) to reach the summit of Mt Everest. Never mind that Her Majesty was born in 1947 and Sir Edmund reached the summit in 1953.

There was an amusing satirical piece mocking that ridiculous lie, making up an extensive history of her parents as devoted beekeepers to justify their early interest in Sir Edmund's career. Wish I could remember where I saw it.

The questionable chronology of the Sir Edmund tale is an addled Joe caliber of "gaffe."

As to the spelling, it would be irresistible for those of us who ain't HRC fans if the hurricane predicted to be destructive were Hillary (double l).
