Yeah this is not something that is "insert random thought about doing a bad thing". this way beyond that and while I do have some sympathy for those that have these urges understand they are abhorrent and never act on them they should not and never have a job that revolves around children and gives access to children.

Part of your job is to safeguard kids and this would be a massive threat to them and frankly a paedo that went for a job with kids should be setting off so many loud alarms it should wake the dead.

While I will allow as to how having the thought is not the same as doing the deed--I'd be locked away for multiple counts of all kinds of crimes were that so, with how often it crosses my mind to kill or rob someone--there is a hard limit which comes when the person who has the thoughts knowingly (even intentionally) takes a job that makes victim access not only likely, but guaranteed because it's a part of the job. At that point, it doesn't matter if he's non-offending or not. He knows his inclinations and he's deliberately putting himself into a position where the opportunity to act on them is available to him.

If the hypothetical were different, if it involved someone admitting that they'd like to shoot up their workplace, maybe specifically target people who are black, or women, or what-have-you, I'll bet that not a single of these comments would be "oh, but it's just a thought, he hasn't acted on it, it'll be fine."

If I found out a school colleague was a paedo, even one who had never harmed a child, I would report them through the safeguarding policy.

If I worked in a warehouse or factory it probably wouldn’t be an issue, but in a job with high-level access to children including extremely young and vulnerable children, nope, I want you gone.

Exactly. The whole question is academic, Schrodinger's pedophile if you were, is a pedophile who doesn't act on his or her inclinations actually a pedophile? How would anyone know? If you know someone is a pedophile, that means they are doing something, acting on some aspect on that to make you aware of that and that's a problem.

I'm against witch-hunts in general but if someone said "I'm sexually attracted to children" obviously they shouldn't be let anywhere near children. If they can't control keeping their sexual inclinations a secret they can't be expected to keep their sexual inclinations under control.

Like I said in the other thread, I get the thinking, but is this the hill to die on?? Most of their arguments avoid the crux of the matter as well - I like cars, are you going to call me a car thief? No, but if you say you like stealing cars and feel a fundamental, biological urge to do so, I'm not going to hire you to look after my car. I might hire you to do my taxes, or cut my grass, but obviously I'd want to avoid putting you in a situation where you were tempted!
