American politics be like this. Quite stupid. You say something that goes against your parties orthodoxy and the partisan hacks will paint you as the enemy. Making it a self fulfilling prophecy really.

Less the left to right pipeline, more, "I drew this line in the sand and everyone on the wrong side of it is going to be pushed with the bulldozer over to the right"

Imagine hanging out with your insanely left wing friends, talking about removing borders, dissolving the police force and that black people are being hunted in the street by roving gangs of red hat wearing Republicans when someone mentions that there's a "Genocide" of trans people happening and you say: "Well, we probably shouldn't dilute the word 'Genocide' like that. Nobody is intentionally attempting to kill or remove them. Remember that real genocides have happened, so out of respect for the horror of those events, let's not fall into hyperbole."...

... And their eyes go dull with incomprehensible rage and the next thing you know you're the only "Far Right Nazi Fascist Extremist Transphobe" who is still supporting BLM, claiming there's an unlimited number of genders and demanding people in real life call you "They/Them".

The endless hunger of the purity spiral.

I remember a few years ago a bunch of people I knew from college, the slacktivist types anyway. Were all going around on Facebook complaining about how "cancel culture isn't real" or some shit and it was quite funny when they ended up on the wrong side of it and were all like "throwing out blatant accusations of groomers is wrong" or some shit.

I mean really a lot of people don't understand that the witch hunt is a very old concept that has existed long before the witch hunts for which the concept is named. Mob justice really. "Cancel culture" is simply the latest term to come out describing it.

And I think it's entirely rooted in the us vs them narrative that most people tend to fall back onto. I've found it difficult to discuss truly offensive topics with most people because they just shy away from the discussion but it makes it impossible to really get a good understanding of the idea if you do that.

I call it the tree of knowledge paradox. Eat the fruit and gain the knowledge of good and evil and become like God, but of course, knowing evil also means you are evil.

Was that way with the trans issues and gay issues growing up, what do we know about these? Well we don't talk about them in public or in private and if you dare to look into it or start exploring the ideas, the normal people will shun you, rightly to some degree I think as it does serve as a kind of social immune response to viral ideas. But I think the internet has changed that dynamic entirely as ideas no longer require people to be in direct contact with each other to spread ideas. And can allow even the most fringe ideas to find others to build off of for better and for worse.

It's always seemed ironic to me that Apple chose the apple with a bite taken out of it as their logo. Seems apt to the current situation I think. The iphone especially at the boom of the smartphone, essentially put the whole of human knowledge, both good and evil, into the palms of the innocent. And while I don't agree with the people who believe that knowledge itself is a sin, you can't truly understand evil without making it a part of you.

I know what you mean. Nothing is achieved, nothing is fixed, nothing is healed, nothing is resolved and nothing is learned because the topic is so taboo that people exist in perpetual fear of... Despite being correct or incorrect... Saying something that will offend and being the next one tied to the pyre.
