Yeah I think that's right.

Christians will criticize atheists with the idea that with no God then there can be no morality. But I think there is some validity to such an argument. Without some kind of "higher morality" beyond the self then one can simply justify ego being the idol of sorts. Self worship seems ultimately unhealthy and anti-social.

At least with secular humanism you still have some overarching framework of morals and a higher power that exists beyond the self. Humanity as a concept.

I guess when the new atheists were encouraging people to leave religion because it was foolish and superstitious didn't realize that humans in general are foolish and superstitious and that religious organizations with all their problems did evolve over time along with successful societies probably as a stop gap to stabilize public idiocy and keep it from self destructing every generation by whatever odd social contagion comes about.

There's a weird thing with chickens, every once in awhile there will be an accident, an egg will break, and some curious chicken will eat it, and figure out "holy shit eggs taste good!" Then that chicken will go around and eat any eggs it can find. The other chickens see this and are like "wait a minute we can eat those!" And soon every single chicken is essentially a cannibal. They'll eat all their eggs, not reproduce and die. The chickens evolved to be this stupid due to human interference of course. We need them to eat so we just pull out the cannibals and fry em up and keep the other chickens blissfully unaware of the tasty eggs.

Looking at religion at face value it often seems pretty rediculous. Why would god pick some random guy in the desert who just happens to be a highly educated Egyptian prince on the lamb and give him a bunch of rules about civics and human behavior for stuff like not eating pork, separating the diseased from your main camp, all wrapped up in a bunch of ceremony.

Hmm what a mystery. Why would God choose some highly educated person instead of some illiterate savage. Hmm. What a mystery.Doesn't god realize some cynical type might accuse Moses of making it up to get the illiterate masses to practice basic hygiene. He should have just come down from heaven himself. I've seen him do it on the Simpsons!

Just to throw a bit more context. Humans are evolutionarily predisposed to religion by natural selection. This doesn't make too much sense if you presume gods don't exist but go back to the stone age and put a question into the proto human mind: "Everything happens for a reason Yes/No"

Now you have 2 humans. One thinks yes the other no. A bush rustles behind you and you think the bush rustles for a reason. You yell out a warning and your clan points obsidian spears at the bush. It was the wind or a predator that got spooked and snuck away. You never actually spot the lion. The other human hears the rustle but thinks it was just random sounds. A lion pops out and eats you.

The humans who think everything happens for a reason pass on their genetics. Other questions arise about the sun and moon and about the origins of mankind. Religion develops which itself be omes a survival mechanism on a society level. People read Leviticus and avoid getting tape worms from pork. Humans themselves then police the human belief in this religious mentality. Genes which promote curiosity outside the religion get punished. There is no lion but your fellow humans tie you to a tree and light you on fire.

Today it's more and more difficult to believe the old teachings because we have actual answers to most of the "mystery" the atheist minded people move on. Religiosity is still incredibly powerful, deeply ingrained in our genetics and some people become desperate to fill a void. It's actually a biological drive to find the religion of your tribe but your tribe is now the internet.
