Shitty photoshop jobs like this are easy to detect, but just think about how much of this kind of shit has already slipped by undetected.

And give AI another 5-20 years to cook, and you're going to witness a world where it will be monumentally difficult for the average layman to tell fact from fiction. You won't be able to rely on any piece of nonfictional media - photos, film, articles, news - any of it, to accurately represent the truth. Bad actors will be able to quickly create millions of volumes of historical revisionism and there will be simply too much of it to track and push back on. And as the custodians of history begin to age and die off, truth will get blurrier and blurrier as a new dark age descends dragging humanity back to its superstitious and scientifically ignorant roots.

That's assuming AI doesn't do a Skynet and destroy all organic life first.

You can't now. Even before computers you could fake pictures if you wanted. Just have a bunch of people wear period accurate clothing, snap a picture somewhere non-descript and in black and white. Then you can make signs about whatever you want. Personally I suggest having suffragettes hold a "9/11 was an inside job" flag that would be funniest.

This is straight out of the Joseph Stalin playbook. If you don't know, Stalin had famous photos doctored to remove images of people he had decided to eliminate as political rivals.
