Journalist Virginia Sole-Smith appeared on the show on Tuesday to discuss her new book Fat Talk: Parenting in the Age of Diet Culture which includes the theory that fat phobia can be traced back to the end of slavery in the US.

Her argument is that when slavery was abolished and African Americans started gaining rights, white supremacists sought to maintain old inequalities by demonizing black bodies and glamorizing thinness.

'This is really about maintaining systems of white supremacy and patriarchy,' she said on the show.

It’s interesting how fucking convoluted the evil plans of the patriarchy are, instead of just using their overwhelming power and access to the machinery of state to subjugate their victims they create these Byzantine, subtle plans that take decades and even centuries to come to fruition - despite the fact that not a single government in the Anglosphere seems capable of operating with any effective means planning beyond a decade or so and that is with the help of the electorate.

What you've just described is pretty much the foundation of all conspiracy thinking and rationalizing. It also serves to explain why (and simultaneously, at that) there is both no evidence of the great conspiracy and everything can be evidence of the great conspiracy. The conspiracist is so invested in pinning responsibility to who- or whatever they've decided is the source of all of their problems that they will construct these elaborate towers of reasoning to justify their investment.

Anyone who comes along and points out the much simpler and (likely) more accurate explanation is derided as refusing to accept the "truth," typically because they're an agent of or shill for the conspiracist's responsible party. It's almost like a cult, except that you can't actually deprogram or otherwise break them loose from their delusions. Because they treat the very attempt as proof that they're right and that their enemy is trying to silence them.

And it's both hilarious and sad that I'm saying this on Saidit which, almost daily, offers lots of examples of this mindset in action.

...and here I thought that if you have a whole group of people who are forced to toil all day in the fields and work themselves to the bone, while getting just enough food to subsist on or less...aren't exactly going to be very fat. (On the opposite side, if you have a group of people enslaving those people, NOT working all day in the fields, and getting to eat their fill every night on the backs of their labor- those people are going to be fatter than their slaves.)

If I go back through my family photos among the olds and middle aged there were a fair amount of fatties. Not American sized fats, that wasn't a thing.

We're they that fat though? I was looking through childhood photos a few years back. And the photos of my friend who was the fattest kid in our class were of a very normal looking kid. In the 80s we all saw her as fat but now she would be utterly unremarkable. I wouldn't even think of the kid in the photo as fat except that I lived through thinking of her as fat.

I was watching a discussion about this, I am blanking on where, and it was pointed out that fat men accept that they’re fat and all that comes with it and don’t expect anyone to find them attractive and as a result there’s zero reason for them to complain. The few, and it is only a few despite the media claims, that do complain get called “incels” and are ostracised, mocked and ignored and considered a terroristic threat when convenience requires a boogeyman.

I’m coming round to the idea that the female-led “fat acceptance” movement is nothing more than the female “incels”, but instead of being treated like male incels, they get fawned over and treated like victims, largely because of the critical social justice takeover of the media and government.
