Sunk cost fallacy. He's put so much into this that he can't be wrong. His mental health simply could not take it. I don't doubt at all that this is the case. So, self-delusion is the answer. Anything is better than facing the ugly truth.

So let's face the ugly truth. The world is a terrible place and must be run by devils. Just look at it. 99.9% of all the life that's ever been lived is just absolutely miserable. Evil always prevails. Everyone is inherently evil deep down, like Gyges who pretended to be a good person until he found a ring that let him be invisible. Even the laws of physics show that the universe cares about one thing only: "might is right". Everything is determined by luck and fate. What even makes it exist? And what force-feeds it to my mind?

The common sense where I come from is appreciation of each day with your surrounding friends and family. I don't know where you're from but it sounds miserable.
