The phrase is believed to have emerged in 2017 as a trolling campaign and has since been used by white supremacists.

reminds me when feminists got mad over "meninists" which was only really a meme where feminist rhetoric was gender swapped and kept saying that it was co-opted by evil incel misogynist types.

The ADL and SPLC were taken in by this and the OK sign, so much so that I fully believe that they make the claim that they are both in use by white supremacists in order to save face and nothing else.

Both organisations suffer from a Nazi supply issue, there’s just not enough to go around.

Doesn't work when the ADL/SPLC fully admit they were taken in, and have flat-out said it's use by white supremacists is "well, YES, we were taken in by a joke and they are not actually used by actual white supremacists... but have you considered, what if they DO??? "

It's a fundraising angle. White supremacists are fairly irrelevant in society and are a convenient Boogeyman.
