While you're right, this is closer to "you'll never know what you REALLY think of a minority group until it's at your doorstep."

That can also go both ways, both "the super-Woke ally who can't stand that their own child is in the group" or "the uber- -ist or -phobic person who changes their ways after a family member is in the group."
