Phone companies suck people into Apple phones. Mine offers free iPhones to new customers. They have free Android phones too, but they are the total junk, bottom of the line, barely usable phones running either an old version of Android or Android Go which is so limited that it's laughable.

People will go for the free iPhone since it's 1000 times better than the free off brand Android being offered by the phone company. Then they are stuck in the Apple ecosystem and forced to pay Apple an exuberant amount of money for any accessories and/or upgrades.

The only people I know that have iPhones are really poor. It's sad, too because they end up spending so much money on their "free" phone because you can't go outside of Apple for apps, or accessories.

I would think that all major service providers do this with all common phones. I agree that the iPhone's quality is preferred. In the OP's article, it's not clear to me if it appropriately addresses the title. For example, the Self Service Repair program was in the United States at launch in 2021, but Apple expanded the program to other countries during 2022. I think many people are aware it's a limited service. Regarding the market share among poor people, the statistics are much higher than that: https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/iphone-market-share-by-country
