The Top sort (and insightful and funny) has time segmenting, so you can already see top last week, last month, etc. The Hot sort could probably support this too, but it's a fair amount of work.

I'd vote for that!

(Easy for me to say.)

The SaidIt font and symbol on this sub looks great!

[–]JasonCarswell[S] 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (3 children)

Thanks. I developed it with magnora7 and d3rr. I've customized all my subs. https://saidit.net/user/JasonCarswell/

I'd offer to give you custom stuff but you don't seem to have any subs. For some more images: https://infogalactic.com/info/SaidIt_gallery

I think it'd be kewl on a t-shirt.

What do you think of this sub's icons and colours? My goal is to make it more ergonomically functional with dedicated colours for specific purposes and better readability. I feel good about the dark theme but feel the light theme needs more work.

You could rearrange the letters for a different statement. Move the S after the T.
Change it to... AIDS IT!

Edit:. I agree that it would be a great tshirt. I'll buy one.

I forgot to mention this, because of my rearrangement idea.

I'm not sure if it's funny, of not.

Or DISTAI!

Or, IS DA' IT?!

Edit:. Or, DA' IS IT....

T' DAISI!

Are you asking for a feature that sorts by less popular post ranking?

[–]JasonCarswell[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

No. I'm asking for longer "fade outs" for lack of a better term.

At present a post that gets say (like now), 12 votes (posted 8 hours ago) will hit the top of the hot. Obviously the one with 13 votes is older (1 day ago) and is 4th. By tomorrow or the next day it could be gone. The only other double digit on the list right now has 18 votes (2 days ago) and is literally last, about to disappear off the first page.

A longer "fade" would have those 12, 13, and 18 vote posts higher on weekly and/or monthly lists.

I already know this kind of voting system is inherently problematic. I know these further poolings would likely exacerbate that problem, yet may help my other problems. Hopefully the creme de la creme would rise.

A longer fade is doable. We have already modified the hot algorithm to be 4x less time sensitive than default Reddit. We could crank it up to 8x or something. If you push it too far though, it just becomes Top.

One thing I want to make clear. I do not want this to change "hot". I want this to be in addition to "hot".

Monthly seems too long but weekly or biweekly rather than daily seems better.

In fact, I'd also like to see a "extra-hot" or "hot this minute" to help diffuse the "pooling" in addition to the "hot today" and "hot this week".

I don't know if this is a pain in the ass or if it can be simply applied, in new tabs or perhaps in a drop down list not unlike the other list:

  • past hour

  • past 24 hours

  • past week

  • past month

  • past year

Except for maybe:

  • 2x Hot This Minute

  • 4x Hot Today <- current default

  • 8x Hot This Week

  • 16x Hot This Fortnight (maybe)

Is the algorithm easy to share? I'm curious what it looks like.

In the comment's "formatting help" Markdown table can you add a few more rows?

First new row left box (maybe after quoted text):

paragraph 1

paragraph 2

dash

paragraph 3

paragraph 4

First new row right box shows how just a "-" will skip a line:

paragraph 1

paragraph 2

paragraph 3

paragraph 4

Second new row left box:

dashdashdash

Second new row right box shows a division line:

Third new row left box:

hashtagHeader

Second new row right box:

Header

Please change the light yellow to a mid-tone so the light and dark text are both visible (ie. #888888).

yes, it's a pain in the ass to add, and I think 'top' is basically what you're after. If anything with a high vote count appears on hot, it will appear on top.

The hot algo: https://github.com/libertysoft3/saidit/blob/c167cc0d48aa1687b3dc19b224e83ad2c3aab8a4/r2/r2/lib/db/_sorts.pyx#L52

I have recorded your 'formatting help' improvement request.

I was hoping it would make sense to me, but I'm very grateful for those links. Maybe if I read that great article again. Definitely going in the article.

Definitely no rush on the formatting help.

I guess a top sorted is what I'm after.

You can press on the new sort function instead of the hot or top one.

[–]JasonCarswell[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

That's not what I'm looking for.

Though I do like that under "insightful" and "funny" and "top" you can sort links from:

  • past hour

  • past 24 hours

  • past week

  • past month

  • past year
