The lounge is just a web irc client, we have it connecting to the open source centralized unreal irc server that we run.

I think we'd be willing to change up the back end, and even ditch IRC, but there's very few chat frontends that happily run all tiny in the sidebar.

Is the side the best place for it?

For example, what if it were at the foot, perhaps in a floating (non-scrolling) or permanent (non-close-able) frame that can be minimized or expanded or adjusted.

Good questions.

As one who dislikes the chat, I don't see the problem. 😂

But on a serious note, I think the chat serves a different function than the forum. We use the comment field to comment posts, what is the sub-specific chat for, discussing the comments?

And I consider it a privacy issue that someone could potentially be hovering in the chat (without logging in no less), register when users log in to a channel, substract the timeout and end up with an accurate list of what sub's the logged in users spend their time on.

Until there's enough traffic here the sub-specific thing is just a nice overkill.

Very good and interesting point about the privacy thing.

If nothing else, an opt-out might be in order.

I think the idea is general discussion of the sub's topic rather than a particular post. But yeah it is kinda weird to have on a commenting site.

There's no access to chat aside from using our TheLounge client, so there's no IRC bots that could be in there, but sure this is a valid concern. There's a setting to disable chat in your preferences if you weren't aware.
