Strategy-wise, I thoroughly enjoy Endless Legends and the Crusader Kings series. I tried many times getting into Civ but I just can't. I think it's because it uses nations that HAVE existed, but puts them completely out of context. I've been replaying XCOM a lot, and the Mount & Blade games are simply ENDLESS fun to me, although that's got a lot of action in it.

I've played a lot of Galactic Civilizations III but it quickly turns into a completely unnecessary clickfest, which they have never fixed, so I gave up on that even though I wasn't done with the game. Maybe GC IV, which is Early Access on Epic, will be better.

I used to be a big counter-strike players (from 1999 to 2017 or so) but I'm done with that. I have enjoyed such highly stressful games in the past, including Playerunknown's Battleground and dying light, but I can't stomach them anymore. I'm worried about a heart attack.

But I can do DayZ. That and Hunt: Showdown are pretty much my maximum stress level. That latter title is one of my favorite games at the moment but I hardly ever play because my usual partner isn't available to play anymore for whatever reason.

On Steam I have 5k hours in Civ V and Civ VI, 1K in Borderlands 2 and presequel, and about 800 in all the Half Life games. Drops off pretty rapidly from there, down to a bunch of games I haven't even opened.

Started playing Minecraft a few weeks after Notch started dev in 2009, and probably have more than a year in game.

Out of all the games on the PS4, GTA V is way ahead, with RDR2 and DayZ as 2 and 3. Mainly play GTA online, but in a single player session via the lowered MTU. Am only a 199 at 50 days, as I didn't transfer my PS3 character over.

A limited number and type of game is probably okay for young kids, but you'd really have to be picky, and limit their play time. They should spend most of their time in the real world.

I play games. A lot. I have a physical disability or more depending how you count it / them, and I can do basically nothing all day. Strategy games help me retain a modicum of concentration, shooter games help me keep my CNS response time close to normal, etc.

So while I agree that they can be and often are toxic to kids, let's not forget that PARENTS don't have time to care for said kids and that is a major reason why games are abused in such a way.

Nothing is ever so simple that you can point at one thing and say, yeah, THAT is the cause. Even Jews. They use people's weakness, so the people are partly responsible for what the Jews do to them.

Anytime you don't have a locally workable copy of something, you don't own it.

I don't know if they still do it, but Comcast did the exact same thing as Ubisoft. Any videos you "bought," are gone if you go a year without an active account. That's not really buying something.

i hear what your saying, im planning on switching back to console unless they pull some severe bullshit. pretty much everything i liked about pc is gone, between invasive drms, internet requirements, and hardware lockouts. theyve taken away just about every reason i switched to it, after the xbox 360 days. those were the things that brought me to pc and granted i really have gotten up to the last second, out of my rig. but if i were to upgrade again, i would start running into all the problems that i switched to pc to get away from (ive read about them, from other's experience). so im going to probably switch back to console, the ease of use was nice. 'and unless' they severely fuck it up, witch i dont put above them. ill probably get a ps5, maybe a xbox but i doubt it. i want the backwards compatibility of the ps5 cause they had quite a few good single player games last gen. but pc gaming isnt what it was when i fist got into it. and honestly i got into the final good days of pc gaming far as i can tell.

But it is indeed a constant, that the pirated copy can be relied on while the legal should never be depended upon wholly. At least piracy will preserve these games for the future, while DRM prevents or slows doing that.

Anybody getting sick of games on PC? by Lambdadelta in PCGaming

[–]NoOil 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Yes, piracy can be the answer to the shitty DRM, and I've heard of cases where the pirated version actually runs better than the store version of the game. I mean come on, that is some real bullshit right there. How can a paying customer have a worse experience with the game than someone who "steals" the game. So while I haven't pirated a game myself in years, I can totally understand why it is still very much alive (apart from older games getting gimped because of music licensing - GTA SA, IV). Maybe the best thing is to buy a game and then just run a pirated copy: you still support the devs and not have to deal with all the crap around it. Same goes for movies btw. The games I play are not really suitable to play on anything other than PC so changing systems won't really work for me personally. I just name Kerbal Space Program, Rimworld, Motorsport Manager (these are the games I play the most). And I haven't even mentioned modding, which makes these games 100x better. So for me, PC is still the way to go, and if DRM really becomes a problem I'll just dust off my eye-patch and raise the sails again ;) Sry for the walls of text, still having some issues with formatting.

I come from a background where piracy is rampant. (It still is where I live). I can't see any reason why pirated games Just Work but then DRM'd games require what they require. And yes, IAPs turn me off as well. How nice to see PC games have both of those.

Now, the most cautious way to actually be satisfied with a legit game is to buy it years after the fact, and hope any updates don't screw it over. A faint hope though.

Though I don't think PC has an advantage when it comes to the games itself as you point out. Those gem indie games are also present on Android and Switch, and having an Android phone can be a boon if you fight past the shovelware on Google Play's displays.

Well, DRM and also microtransactions are not solely bounded to PC gaming, consoles and mobile seem to have the same issues with this. Redshell ruined the Total War series for me, those cheeky bastards even put it in their older games (Empire, Napoleon). I wrote a bad review on the Steam for this reason, and the devs happily reported back that they removed it from their games. It shouldn't have been there in the first place!

PC is getting loads of PSN and XBLN knockoffs

I think this has to do with the "quantity over quality", the flooding of the market who see it as a huge opportunity.

To do any modding these days, half the editors, half the mod tools, even the mods themselves often times, are available exclusively on steam.

Or cost an arm and a leg... I mod for personal preference - and there's only so much you can do without a 3d modelling studio or specialized file extension stuff... very frustrating.

Most games are either valve steam exclusive, epic steam exclusive, ubisoft steam exclusive, you simply don't have a choice in the matter.

Similar to how things like oil industry developed. Just the consolidation of properties and cash.

And yet, I don't think these gems are enough to make the PC significantly more tolerable when it comes to games.

They USED to be... but I agree, the quality is declining and the choices are being either ported quickly to other platforms or just ripped-off, copies of copies of copies, etc.

Personally, I see it as the developers no longer being accountable for the things they produce. The major "triple A" studios now have so much money that they can produce crap and it won't matter. 20 years ago, if Westwood put out a single crappy game, they would have gone bankrupt, but now... "eh, we can absorb the loss of a few million fans".

The gaming industry is something I've focused on, while searching for real world examples of "how much money, is too much".

Haven't bought a "triple AY game" in years, all I buy is Indie titles nowadays. Seems like those devs are the only ones who care about making a great game, with money coming second. Also I think that if you get the right game, you get your moneys worth and then some. I got a couple of games I bought for $20,- or less, and got several 100's of hours out of them. No ragret's ;) I think this is where PC clearly has the advantage over console gaming. DRM can be an issue, and I don't think it's something we'll get rid of. But IMO the biggest cancer in gaming today are the "micro-transactions". I think there is just one situation where those are allowed, and that is in F2P games. Any game you BUY shouldn't have any form of transactions in them. It's a disgusting system, and only there to get people hooked into spending way more money than the game is worth. Do your research before buying a game, instead of buying into the hype. But I guess the people who come here already know that ;)

dice rolls to determine if I even hit or not.

It only works if the player doesn't have to do manual aiming. The Borderlands series is guilty of this as well.

Pretty sure I already have a few copies, including an old GOTY edition on discs, but good to know!

I just haven't been able to get back into Morrowind after experiencing life after dice rolls to determine if I even hit or not.

The Outer Worlds is going to be exclusive on Epic Store. Will you be buying it? by VantaFount in PCGaming

[–]VantaFount[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I personally refuse to buy into the Epic store, so I'll either buy it on Steam after the exclusivity period ends.....and demand a sale price; Or I'll pirate it during the exclusivity period. Admittedly I will buy the game when it becomes available on Steam because I love single player RPGs and I want to see more made.
But I won't buy it through Epic.
Sadly I have to say the same about Rebel Galaxy Outlaw, which is a damn shame because I absolutely love the original.

Hollow Knight is a great Metroidvania if you're into that.

(Huh, the topic is 5 months old)

Ah, VVVVVV must be mentioned. Game is short, simple, sweet and difficult (although not all that tough). In addition, the game has a level editor, which means you can download levels from the distractionware forums. If you don't want the main campaign and want the custom levels (or just want to get an idea of the game), the Make and Play Edition is available completely free of charge.

Also the soundtrack is one of the best retro chiptune OST you could listen to.

know what games you play

That's a given with time tracking and their "social stuff," but according to a recent news, they're exposed in such a way that Epic can harvest them in the background. And to be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if it was intentional.

You don't own any games for real

As a DRM solution themselves, they can also enforce this idea by denying you from playing if they can't log you in for whatever reason (offline "mode" broken, your account deleted, etc), while claiming it's to fight piracy.

Evermore makes a new map every day. It's fun to try and get them under 20 mins, or under 10 mins if you're an expert ;)

But it's a completely random new map, every day, forever. Plus it's just a well-made game

Factorio is the best game, I was playing it last night actually.

Also this is a good free flash game that I really enjoy playing on vacation and stuff. It's strategy based and you have to build a network to take over the level, it's kind of like factorio in that regard: http://onemorelevel.com/game/creeper_world_evermore

  • Space Chem http://www.zachtronics.com/spacechem/ [same maker has a bunch of other games I'll most likely try out this winter] Hard to explain though the title covers it.

  • TIS-100 http://www.zachtronics.com/tis-100/ [oh heh, didn't know it was the same maker, could have figured though] A puzzle game in which you have to write some sort of assembly(er) only with multiple processors. It's about a spy/encryption machine and has a need little story and hidden objectives (also a pretty extensive manual)

  • Slay The Spire https://www.megacrit.com/press/#factsheet [early access but still very playable, weekly updates/challenges] A deck building rogue-like (don't worry, all the cards come with the game). Very addictive when you die, but when you succeed you either choose another character or let it lie for a couple of weeks

  • Into the breach https://subsetgames.com/itb.html [From the makers of FTL (check that one out too, very nice)] Puzzle time-travel turn based strategy/puzzle game. Save humanity (or not) over and over again (rogue-like elements)

  • KeeperRL http://keeperrl.com/ [also early access, sometimes Linux support breaks for a couple of weeks] It's a rogue-like DUNGEON KEEPER like game, only nice 2d with optional ascii sprites (but the default sprites are awesome 2d art). Very enjoyable. Build the ultimate evil lair!

  • Sunless sea http://www.failbettergames.com/sunless/ [There is a sequel Sunless skies or something, but haven't played that one] An atmospheric story driven game, nice art and cool lovecraftian vibes. Gets dull after a few days, but when it's a stormy night it's very enjoyable.

  • Caves of Qud http://www.cavesofqud.com/ [nethack+++++++++++] Very nice science fantasy RPG & roguelike epic. It’s set in a far future that’s deeply simulated, richly cultured, and rife with sentient plants.

  • Paper Please http://www.papersplea.se/ [Be ready for feels] A dictatorship border-guard simulator

  • Darkest Dungeon https://www.darkestdungeon.com/ [indie with some DLCs] As the url implies a Lovecraftian rogue-like, hire people, keep them fed, happy and SANE while delving into the pit's of what lurks beyond hell.

  • Don't starve https://www.klei.com/games/dont-starve [There is a multiplayer version (Don't starve together)] A surreal survival/craft game, don't die/starve because starting over is a PAIN (unless you unlocked a new character).

That should give you something todo! Some of the games already made it to mobile or even switch platforms!

I don't have a study but if you don't know, there are tons of web analytics packages also tracking your mouse movements. They can tell by how you scroll if you're engaged in the content or not. So it's happening on many ecommerce sites, etc.

No I do not game anymore, mostly bc of interest in learning bmx but I lost interest and think the air force made a huge mistake on vetting for drone operators at the time. They prolly knew I wouldn't shoot civs and would know, they want low tier retards who won't figure it out. (toots my own horn a bit hehe)
