If you have good enough eyesight to see your own reflection in a pencil across the room, then I think there's a different discussion to be had.

In college, I was best friends with the guy who had the “walk on water” scholarship. He had a complete trust fund that would have paid for him to go nearly anywhere but he and I went to this hick liberal arts school because they all but paid us.

I got well more than half my education paid for but he got the full everything. Free room, board, tuition, books, stipend. So e would just petition his trust fund executor (his mom) for a nicer computer every year since that’s what he was studying.

Then my friend found out about this guy who was also in our same year. I can’t go so far as to say that he was “literally” retarded because I don’t recall what his actual condition was. He may have had some brilliance in there for something. But he was always very slow on the uptake, spoke with a more than moderately severe lisp that seemed to go far beyond any normal physical or emotional impediments, and had to have his text books scanned in and read to him by a computer.

It was college though and most peeps were pretty cool so if anyone ever made fun of him, even the biggest assholes almost always jumped to his defense. I have to say, he always did enjoy it A LOT when other people made fun of the people who tried to make fun of him. All in all, I’d say, he was about on par with someone with slightly less emotional and intellectual capacity than Old Gregg. If you gave him some time, he could often come up with something observant or funny to say but he had zero ability to connect with most other people, well beyond autism.

My walk on water friend never made fun of him. Never spoke to him. Never acknowledged him. But OBVIOUSLY was FURIOUS that “this person” was going to earn the same degree as him. To which I always reminded him that he had picked this college himself. I’m paraphrasing for plausible deniability but our school ACTUALLY billed itself as the top choice for the average student. My friend and I were just the filler they paid to maintain the curve average students would expect.

So anyway, for some reason, this retard was both given a drivers license and allowed to drive and obviously then crashed his car and died. All I’m saying is, things find a way of evening out in the end.

Obviously this type of thing is going to continue to happen. And given the nature of the way this was uncovered, it's likely happened many times previously.

I doubt it would ever come to pass but what we need is a law that specifically parses out information incidentally uncovered under such demands and allows individuals to deny the use of such incidentally uncovered information in further proceedings.

Certainly, we all believe "the gubmint" is out to just collect as much info as possible for future use. And obviously it's also being claimed that if these scopes are being illegally sold to known terrorist organizations, it's "all hands on deck."

Both are not with validity. Now obviously, such fish finding missions do lead to uncovering other illegal activity -- which findings, have in the past, often been deemed inadmissible based on suspicious discovery by law enforcement.

While we all hope that this demand fails and future such demands are also turned away, there "oughta be a law" against use of evidence "incidentally" dragnetted.

It's just like fishermen are allowed to use a dragnet but they have to ensure that they are throwing back the non-targeted fish. It's the Dolphin Safe Tuna of law enforcement information gathering.

Probably on a Friday when we're all away for the weekend. The world will weep and then life will go on for the rest of us.

I'm very glad that we're arming Korea and Japan.

What's disgusting to me is this was never an issue until the US military started paying sports teams to have players come out and stand around the flag post 9/11.

The McCain Report details the entire thing and literally no one gives a fuck. Every time I tell a reasonable, free thinking, open minded person about this, they are literally floored and disillusioned beyond belief.

My life is intense and enjoy getting rowdy with some friends around some football. It's good clean fun and people legitimately bond over it. But I have no illusions about disgusting cash behind it.

I'm trying to remember when I first learned about the masons. I'm fairly certain I we must have learned about them in middle school while studying the enlightenment. I know I had a friend in college who was obsessed with them.

I was grabbing a quick bight at my favorite taco stand yesterday and I actually overheard three Asian people talking about pretty much exactly this.

It does seem a little intense that those random not exactly high paid, under a lot of stress border guards have so much sway and phone searches at travel points need significantly tight controls. But I’m also not against a bit of a clampdown. People can be a tad laissez fairy and entitled when they travel.

So there were three Asians sitting by me. I’m going to guess they were Korean because that’s where one of them seemed to indicate they were from. Two were a couple who had been traveling together so it’s possible the third was a local, although I got the impression they were all travelers.

The one asked the couple how Chicago was and the guy said, “It all went as planned but you need some drama. When we flew into LA, they asked grilled us on all sorts of questions.”

The woman chimes in, “I had just written on the form for destination LA and the he asks, ‘what city is this?’” Then the guy also mentions they had been to Shanghai and they got ask questions about that.

None of that exchange seems terribly out of line with my own experience in Europe. But in just the same way as my traveling in Europe showed me...

This whole process of last minute boarder and travel checks seems very WWII levels of archaic to me. Why is this “good old fashioned police work,” being conducted by these gruff dudes at the check stand? Traveling is stressful enough.

Why aren’t these tasks performed at the Visa issuing level? It seems like a good old mission creep power grab to me where existing departments just try to get more and more power for themselves while no one has their eye on the overall system.

All I know is, this thing with civil rights disappearing at the boarder has got to go. It’s not conducive to an open, growing economy and flourishing society.

At the same time, I’m open to certain people from certain countries being more highly scrutinized. It’s a small percentage, sure, but it’s also a sad fact that we have allies and enemies and there are Chinese business interests actively attempting to steal tech secrets and other people in other parts of the world who mean us harm.
