Paranoid schizophrenia is an unpleasant condition. And maybe if he were an atheist, he might have formed the belief that the government or aliens has swapped his baby for a surveillance device.

But with a Christian world view, the step is shorter and more complete. The baby is evil by some demonic or satanic influence. He now has his justifications for the physical abuse of the infant.

Although to be fair, we're probably going to have different opinions on that, an matter which act we're talking about, since I don't really go in for demons.
