That's just not true. The "rebellious" girls are depicted as the heroes, and their abandonment of religion as a victory over oppression.

They think they're heroes but the audience is supposed to see how disgusting and damaging what they are doing is.

And that claim is based on what? Does the movie show them suffering consequences as a result of this that are not portrayed as being the fault of religion? I highly doubt it.
