Some landlords are being told to put up their rents 20 per cent or more by property managers who say bigger increases are needed now that rents can only be adjusted once a year.

One landlord said the recommendation for one of his properties was a 34 per cent increase. That was higher than he expected, or needed to cover his expenses.

After he objected, the property, which was vacant, was advertised with a 26 per cent higher rent for the new tenancy.

Stewart Island is a small Island off the coast of the South Island. The locals there want the grocery store (the only grocery store I might add) to wear masks. They are worried about spreading holocough.

The advertising industry is self-regulated through the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), with junk food marketing towards children falling under the agency’s voluntary Children and Young People’s Advertising Code, which is due for its five-yearly review.

Health groups are boycotting the submission process in protest of a system they say does little to protect children from junk food advertising and is contributing to New Zealand’s worsening rates of childhood obesity.

They have written to the health and associate health ministers urging the Government to address childhood obesity and poor nutrition through regulation of junk food marketing and implementation of a range of recommended policies.

Covid-19 NZ: Border reopening to begin from late February, to proceed in five stages

New Zealanders in Australia will be able to skip MIQ and enter New Zealand from 11.59pm on Sunday the 27th of February, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced.

This will be the first of five stages of gradual border reopening, with Kiwis from all around the world let in two weeks later.

The returning Kiwis will have to be vaccinated and self-isolate – but won’t need a space in a Government-run managed isolation facility (MIQ). Critical workers in Australia will also be able to travel in.

From March 13 New Zealanders from the rest of the world will be able to return under similar conditions, alongside some critical workers, and their families.

These first two stages include both citizens and permanent residents.

In April non-citizens with visas – like international students and a wider swath of skilled workers – will be able to skip MIQ.

Then no-later than July the country is expected to open up to non-citizens from visa-waiver countries – like Australia, the USA, and UK.

Ardern emphasised that this could happen prior to July however, saying there was a “high-likelihood” things could move faster.

From October New Zealand would open up to the rest of the world and normal visa processing would resume.

Arrivals to self-isolate, take rapid tests At first arrivals will need to self-isolate for 10 days, but once New Zealand moves to “phase two” of the Omicron outbreak that period will drop to 7 days, meaning returning Kiwis will be treated the same way close contacts within New Zealand now.

They will be given three rapid antigen tests at the airport – one for use on day zero or one, one for use on day five or six, and an extra as a backup. Anyone who tests positive will be asked to get a follow-up PCR test.

Ardern said MIQ would remain for “high risk travellers such as those who are unvaccinated” – but it would slowly be transformed into a new National Quarantine Service.

She defended the use of MIQ, which has restricted entry to New Zealand for almost two years, saying it had been heartbreaking but had saved lives.

“The anguish of MIQ has been real, and heartbreaking. But the choice to use it undeniably saved lives,” Ardern said.

”MIQ meant not everyone could come home when they wanted to. But it also meant that Covid could not come in when it wanted to, either.”

She said there were safeguards that meant this reopening was safe.

“We will be as boosted as possible at the end of February, the phasing reduces the risk of a surge in cases, and travellers will be testing and isolating, with MIQ remaining for the unvaccinated. This means we will know quickly if a traveller has the virus including any new variants,” Ardern said.

She also said the self-isolation requirement would be reassessed and likely lifted eventually.

“The strong advice from our public health officials is that we still need it to manage our way through Omicron, but there will be a time in the not too distant future when that will not be the case.”

Ardern also confirmed that she herself would lead four trade delegations this year – to Australia, the USA, Asia, and Europe.

She said the stage two of the border reopening on March 13 would allow many critical workers in, and skilled workers making 1.5 times the median New Zealand salary.

”This means that health workers, farm managers, horticultural workers, tech sector professionals, those working for accounting services, in education and construction, will all be eligible to enter New Zealand, self-isolate for a short period and then go about their business,” Ardern said.

The Government has previously announced two border reopening plans and had to scrap them as outbreaks of new variants either at home or abroad scared them off – first Delta, then Omicron.

Ardern moved the gap between the second dose of the vaccine and the booster from four months to three months on Wednesday, making about a million more Kiwis eligible for the booster - which makes them far more protected from the Omicron variant.

That decision was deeply linked to the border reopening decision, as it allows more Kiwis to be protected, and it is hoped it will keep some strain off the healthcare system.

Wellington Cancelled Lunar New Year Festival, due to run from February 1 to 12, has cancelled many of its large events, including the parade and Asian market, while the Gindulgence Festival due to run January 29 to 30 says it won’t go ahead on those dates.

Cancelled New Zealand Fashion Week, due to be held from February 7 to 12, has been cancelled.

Mohammed Raheesh Isoof, 65, was on trial in Fiji for the murders of Nirmal Kumar, 63, his wife Usha Devi, 54, their daughter Nileshni Kala and her two children Sana, 11, and Samara, 8.

The bodies of the family were found on a remote clifftop on August 26, 2019.

Isoof was also found guilty of attempted murder after Samaira Kumar, who was aged 1 at the time, was found alive next to the dead bodies. She was the niece of Nileshni Kala.

It was supposed to be a straightforward trip to Auckland for Jem Traylen.

But a metal buckle kicked off a series of events that resulted Traylen, a transgender person, missing their flight and finding themselves at odds with airport security procedures.

The belt pinged the metal detector during a screening at Wellington Airport and Traylen was directed to pass through the Leidos Provision2 body scanner.

The advanced imaging technology compares a passenger's body to a body type algorithm, to search for unusual areas that may indicate a hidden weapon or contraband. Security staff make a call about the passenger’s gender, male or female.

On that day, attempts to process Traylen through the scanner as either male or female resulted in the system highlighting areas on their body that did not conform to either gender.

I'd like to make fun of the kiwis here, but the US is heading that way too. Or was, smoking is up for the first time in a long time thanks to covid.

First they came for the smokers and I didn't care because I was a smoker. But they didn't just go after the smokers right off. They waged a campaign against smoking for decades and shut it down little by little, turned the public against smoking.

Think about the other unhealthy things you do enjoy doing (I mean in general, seem to be quite a few smokers here). Alcohol is the obvious next choice to try to phase out.

PB Tech will become a Vaccinated Business from Monday 6th December

We're sending you this email to update you on an important change here at PB Tech that may impact on you as a customer. With New Zealand now operating in the traffic light system (COVID-19 Protection Framework), PB Tech has moved to become a Vaccinated Business, effective from Monday 6th December 2021.

Please read below to see how this move will affect day to day operations across our store network and online.

PB Tech stores within Auckland

Showrooms will reopen on Monday 6th December to My Vaccine Pass holders only

PB Tech store showrooms in Auckland initially remained closed as Auckland moved to Level 3 Step 2 on 10th November 2021. Because this transition to Level 3 Step 2 occurred in the middle of our busy Black Friday Sale, we believed delaying the opening of our Auckland showrooms was the right move to prioritise the health and safety of our customers and staff.

From Monday 6th December however we are pleased to announce Auckland store showrooms will reopen again, but access will be limited to My Vaccine Pass holders only and many stores will also have restricted showroom space to help us conduct business more safely and efficiently. For anyone without a My Vaccine Pass, click & collect will be available at the door. Again we are doing this to prioritise the health and safety of our fully vaccinated customers and staff.

We will also be implementing enhanced social distancing and hygiene protocols in line with red traffic light guidelines which includes the regular disinfecting of high contact surfaces like counters and eftpos terminals and the requirement for staff and customers to wear face masks (unless exempted) while inside our stores.

Returns and warranty

We recommend that returns and warranty requests are submitted online, but from Monday 6th December if you are a My Vaccine Pass holder you will be able to request returns directly in-store and also drop off items approved for return online. Alternatively, you can still courier returns to PB Tech for processing following the instructions provided by our returns team.

Out of warranty repairs and services

We recommend pre-booking service jobs online by first requesting a quote. It's easier and faster, although from Monday 6th December if you are a My Vaccine Pass holder you will be able to head in-store and drop off your device with our service team directly if you prefer.

Our courier service will not be impacted by our move to become a Vaccinated Business, however we'd like to take this opportunity to remind our customers that our courier partners delivering orders placed with 'Standard Delivery' are currently experiencing very high volumes with delivery delays being reported throughout New Zealand, particularly in Auckland. We strongly recommend using 'Evening Delivery' (available in select areas only before 2pm), 'Next Business Day Delivery' (available in Auckland only before 4pm), click & collect or shopping in-store (if available in your region) if at all possible.

Click & collect

1-hour click & collect is currently available at all PB Tech stores outside of Auckland however from Monday 6th December only holders of a My Vaccine Pass will be able to collect their goods from inside these stores. For anyone without a My Vaccine Pass, click & collect will still be available at the door.

Zero-touch click & collect is currently available at all PB Tech stores within Auckland however from Monday 6th December Auckland showrooms will reopen and our standard 1-hour click & collect service will resume but again only holders of a My Vaccine Pass will be able to collect their goods from inside these stores and persons without a My Vaccine Pass will need to collect at the door.

While it's likely a small number of our valued customers will be negatively impacted by our decision to become a Vaccinated Business, ultimately we believe this move is in the best interests of the majority of our customers who are vaccinated, our vaccinated staff, and the company as a whole.

About 50kg of cocaine had been seized either in New Zealand or at overseas ports, police said, with six search warrants carried out in Canterbury yesterday.

Six Colombian nationals - five of whom were working as contractors on Canterbury farms - and one Argentinian have been arrested, while another person was arrested in Auckland.

The joint operation working alongside the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Colombian national police, Spanish customs, and Cook Islands customs service.

"Based on wastewater data, we believe this group was supplying the majority of cocaine into New Zealand," Williams said.

"The investigation is unique as it has linked the importation of cocaine from South America and Spain into New Zealand, as well as money laundering offences in the United States of America."

Williams, who thanked the DEA for providing a lot of resources, as well as the police in Colombia, said the group had been operating for more than two years.

It was a massive blow to the organised crime group and the flow of cocaine into the country, with Williams saying the group was one of the biggest suppliers.

Networks from Colombia brought the drugs into New Zealand, with money quickly being shovelled out of the country to America.
