I was friends with a guy (RIP Gene) who worked with her at the radio station on base. Her husband at the time was in the military. She did spots for the radio station part time, and everyone there kept telling her how good she was and pushed her to pursue a full career in music.

I think it's interesting she chose songs that addressed social issues. And she has an amazing vocal range. If there were some way to track the number of times per day her songs in the early 80s were aired in the US, she'd be among the top 10, for Heartbreaker (1979), Hit Me With Your Best Shot (1980), Hell Is for Children (1980), Shadows of the Night (1982), and Love Is a Battlefield (1983).
