In Manhattan, c.1998-2001, I was at an interesting and memorable party thrown by Joseph Cultice. I'd forgot or never knew his full name until now when I looked up the album cover for Marilyn Manson's "Mechanical Animals" because not only had he taken that photo, he had giant photos all around his huge empty/minimalist concrete apartment. My fave was the Blondie photo, faaaaar too big to even fit in most homes (I'm pretty sure, but being drunk may have affected my recollection). He didn't have much furniture or anything for that matter. I was guessing it was a live/work studio, not just an apartment, different much like friends in L.A. and S.F. and even me when I lived in Oakland. So little furniture. At one end was a bench-like table with a collection of vintage toy ray guns. Odd. So were many of the guests, though all very nice if you weren't afraid to talk with them. I probably met some other semi-famous people there but obviously nothing stuck in my mind, and certainly no one like Manson or Blondie were there.

I can see what you mean about them not “evolving enough”, from the perspective of a person who only listens maybe a few times a year tho, the changes are noticeable! They aren’t huge though and I can totally see what you mean.

In my head, I’m comparing them to acts like blink-182 for example. And blink-182 did have potential, their self-titled album was really good, but after that they went in reverse trying to revive their old sound with their last 2 albums.

I think the opposite actually! I'm not a big fan and Billy Talent randomly pop into my head a few times a year so I check up on them 2 see if they've done anything new (they were never big where I lived or received any advertising or anything.. I don't think they ever toured here either..), and I feel unlike other bands from their era and of their genre (and similar genres) that are still making music today, they haven't become a band that's either:

  • A) Based their music around nostalgia and created songs that sounded like their older songs with the same themes and messages.. There are many pop-punk and alternative bands from the US still around making music singing about teenage/high-school issues, and it's really cringey seeing guys in their mid-40's who have families sing about issues they've covered multiple times, and aren't relative to them, to appeal to nostalgia and a younger audience.

  • B) Sold out. They've progressed musically, but they haven't compromised their sound to the point of selling-out like a lot of US Bands are also doing.. Take Bring Me The Horizon for example (although I will admit, they are doing it better than a lot of other bands trying to do it), they went from a hardcore screamo/emo band, and transitioned to this almost dark synthwave/goth pop band (which seems to be a trend with US bands atm), especially with their last album release which is much more commercial friendly and left a nice portion of their fan-base divided. You would have never thought this band would have developed into this one.

So yeah, I know opinions are like assholes.. But I feel they aren't doing so bad compared to many of their peers.

I agree! I think they always sorta got stuck in that in-between place where they never quite got huge but had a decent amount of popularity. I remember a friend of mine recommending them years ago. I think their first album had already been out for a while by that point, so it seems to have stayed kinda underground at first, which is weird because I like their first album best. I like the stuff they did after but nothing will ever top their first album for me. (check out "Try Honesty" and "River Below")

Billy Talent - Surrender by Enza in MusicVideos

[–]Enza[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I honestly don't know the band members names, albums or song titles.. They just randomly pop into my head a few times a year since I discovered them in high-school. For some reason I never got into them but I really like their music a lot. I'm not sure what the term for it is, but the lead singer has an awesome vocal range and is great at holding notes.. He's just a great singer all-around, not even sure how to describe his style, but it's unique and so is his voice. Their music has progressed really well too, it's changed, but it still sounds like them in a good way, not like they sold-out, and not like they're trying to hold onto the past and becoming a band based on nostalgia.

For some reason they never got big in the USA, at least not on the east coast. None of my friends had ever heard of them, and tbh, I never saw any advertising for them for some reason. They definitely were one of the better bands from that era musically imho, and they've aged well musically too, compared to American pop-punk/rock acts.. It's kind of cringey hearing men in their mind 40's still singing about teenage issues when they aren't 19 anymore and have written many songs on the topic.

Thanks for the recommendations! So far all the songs I’ve heard from them have a very different sound to them (T2P, Little Dark Age, EF & Kids) - it’s like the vocals are their signature, but sonically/instrumentally, anything goes, which is interesting.

I like Electric Feel’s sound a lot, but Kids reminded me a lot of this track. It was almost like a part 1 with the music video combined. The monsters around the crib scaring the baby were all older relatives/grandparents, and when you’re a baby, everyone and everything is scary to you - cognitive development-wise, for the first 6 months you look mainly to your mother for comfort. I’ve noticed between these four songs they have a lot of interesting themes in their music about family, society, life and “growing up”. I always overlooked them as hipster pop, my loss lol

Ty again 😊

I never heard it until I watched "The Magicians" a few months ago, it's in the first episode and the first episode captures the message and feelings of this song perfectly. I remember it making me catch the feels back then.

I'm almost done with Uni, and just moved into my first apartment a month ago, the day I moved in I had this song on repeat. This song is going to be how I remember 2020 lol. I mean, we're all human. We all feel this way to an extent. And knowing some truths about this world, society, how corrupt and "fake" (and game-like) it is & can be, makes it kinda even more painful to listen to.

Edit: By any chance, do u have any good MGMT recommendations 4 me? This and "Little Dark Age" are the only 2 songs I know by them so far/like.

When I say I'm an Einstein skeptic, I don't mean that he wasn't original, I'm saying the speed of light is just a speed (not a maximum), and the usefulness of his equations is probably incidental. I don't have the math to prove that last part, but after all these years, I'd think it'd be more widespread knowledge at the lower tiers of education.

This is an absurdist comedy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yp_l5ntikaU What Al is doing is just absurd, hoping to get a nervous laugh in response, right.. I hope you see what I'm saying and the differences between a well written, clever thing and a jerkoff diary...?!

Terrible, man. Unfunny, dumb....Reminds me of Twitch streamers today who think they are talented and funny, and yet are neither. Stern was really funny before he grew a vagina, edgy, mean...but imagine if he started doing parodies these days...he'd be as interesting as Weird Al..But, to each his own, you know....

Way back when I was just a little bitty boy Living in a box under the stairs in the corner of the basement of the house Half a block down the street from Jerry's Bait Shop (You know the place) Well, anyway, back then life was going swell and everything was just peachy!

Except, of course, for the undeniable fact that every single morning My mother would make me a big ol' bowl of sauerkraut for breakfast

Aw, big bowl of sauerkraut! Every single mornin'! It was driving me crazy

I said to my mom I said, "Hey, mom, what's up with all the sauerkraut?" And my dear, sweet mother She just looked at me like a cow looks at an oncoming train And she leaned right down next to me And she said, "It's good for you!" And then she tied me to the wall and stuck a funnel in my mouth And force fed me nothing but sauerkraut until I was twenty six and a half years old

How is this funny? I just don't get it...he compared his mother to a cow...is he trying to entertain 4 year olds?? Whats going on

I just thought it was a cool revolt song. But I guess a parallel can be made between the protests in China and today's civil unrest.

Why don't we keep China in the 1980s out of any discussion of the US in 2020. That is the connection you wish to make, I presume.

The lyrics are hilarious, because they imbed practical truths.

"It's the end of your life... You're lucky; if you die... Sometimes, I wonder... Why I even try?!"

Tears For Fears - Mad World by JasonCarswell in MusicVideos

Mad World

(originally by Tears for Fears, made famous by Gary Jules in 2003)

All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for their daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere

Their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression, no expression
Hide my head, I wanna drown my sorrow
No tomorrow, no tomorrow

And I find it kinda funny
I find it kinda sad
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles
It's a very, very mad world, mad world

Children waiting for the day they feel good
Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday
And I feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen, sit and listen

Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me, no one knew me
Hello teacher tell me what's my lesson
Look right through me, look right through me

And I find it kinda funny
I find it kinda sad
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles
It's a very, very mad world, mad world

Enlarging your world
Mad world

Kanye West - Hands On (Jesus is king Church Session Performance Live) by Enza in MusicVideos

You'd have to ask him!

But the Obscene album was from before his psych-ward stay and apparent learning of MK-ULTRA (according to his twitter leaks). That was really only one of two albums that he was obscene on out of his large discography (The Life of Pablo & My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, the latter of which was the lesser obscene and is a good album in it's own right) - His first 3 albums are honestly great. So is Yeezus, it's like honest, confused anger.

But I do like Gospel Kanye best. He did release Jesus Walks as one of his first singles which discuses how he won't get radio plays if he makes songs about Christ among other things obviously (this came out before 808s and heartbreak which came out in like 08). He never was an obscene rapper if you actually listen to his discography.

For whatever he is, as big as a celebrity and hip-hop artist as he is, I've never seen anyone of his class say something like this in one of their (recent) songs:

"Black on black lies is worse than black on black crime

The Jews share their truth on how to make a dime

Most black men couldn't balance a checkbook

But buy a new car, talkin' 'bout, "How my neck look?"

Well, it all looks great

Four hundred years later, we buyin' our own chains

The light is before us brothers, so the devil workin' hard

Real family stick together and see through the mirage

The smokescreens, perceptions of false reality

Who the real owner if your boss gets your salary?"

Why is Kanye going from obscene songs about sex to Gospel Music?

I think this is the first time I'm sharing a Kanye West track.. He's my favorite modern hip-hop artist. The media makes him look terrible, but he honestly is a pretty smart, good intentioned human being. He's flawed just like everyone else, but if you took the time to see the truth about his life, it's kinda crazy everything he's been put through (he's always been a big problem for the powers that be, Myers reaction in this clip still makes me laugh to this day along with the time they cut them off).

Including MK-ULTRA shit. On the last date before the Life of Pablo tour was canceled, he went on rant telling audience the truths we know about Google, Facebook, Politicians, etc, and he was thrown into the psychward for it and woke up after being put into a 2 week coma addicted to 80 mg of oxy, as they were giving it to him everyday without him knowing, he was unconscious. So he woke up an addict on a leash also brainwashed with the bleached hair. First thing, flies out to see Trump for a photo shoot. Not suspect at all. The hospital he stayed at is the infamous "mind control" celebrity hospital, that only celebrities who have psychological breakdowns like Lohan, Hilton, etc are taken to.

When his Twitter was hacked and everyone was expecting music leaks, in his messages, he was sending people like Travis Scott a PDF of a book on MK-ULTRA and how to resist mind control. So he's well aware of it and even speaks about it in his newer interviews.

Everything is in this interview, but I know most people here wouldn't be interested in giving it the time. This interview was after he moved to a secret location in Wyoming for over a year, even his wife didn't know where he lived (isn't that weird?), he had no phone, nothing. He said he needed to get away from everyone because he couldn't trust anyone. This all happened around 2 months after the incident when he was put into the psychward, then he randomly disappeared and deleted all of his social media and re-appeared a year and half or so later and invited certain people out to see him (you can tell how nervous he is in this first interview by his body language, just watch the first 60 seconds and you'll hear everything you need to hear): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxwfDlhJIpw

"What do you think caused the breakdown?"

"Fear.. Stress.. Control.. Being controlled.. Manipulation.. Like being a pawn, a chess piece, in the game of life.. Stressing over things that create validation that I didn't need to worry about as much.. And the concept of competition and being in competition with so many elements at one time, within a race against time, with age, you're getting old.. A race against popularity.. I could take up the whole interview just talking about everything.."
