Nicely comprehensive.

I love a lot of these. I'd also add Under the Silver Lake, The Double Life of Veronique and Minority Report.

Minority Report? How is that a mindfuck movie? It was pretty straight forward, just the entire idea is kinda absurd, but then Matrix would be mindfuck movie, but it cleary isn't.

There are a lot of concepts in the expertly produced and easily understandable Minority Report that are exceptionally noteworthy, and if not mindfucks they certainly cling to the back of your mind.

The Matrix is listed in science-fiction.

[–]Mazurro 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (4 children)

Meh, I wouldn't say Matrix nor Minority Report should be there. Also, not including mother! by Aronofsky is making this entire list not even worth a spit.

[–]JasonCarswell[S] 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (3 children)

The list is great, as is Mother! - like an intense acid trip.

[–]Mazurro 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (2 children)

I see a mother! is there actually, after reconsideration, it's not that bad but I would add some movies.

[–]JasonCarswell[S] 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

What would you add?

I don't know if I'd put it under "drama", but I wouldn't know where else would be good. I still haven't looked extensively at the list, but I will.

In addition to my lists linked above, I'd add a category for "directors" and "series", because often their whole body of work or a series fits. Off the top of my head:

[–]Mazurro 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

In terms of Directors: Refn, Gaspar Noe, Von Trier, Aronofsky. They are definitely one of the greatest in shocking kind of mindfuck.

To add movies - Check my other comment.

Yeah I definitely see what you’re saying and I almost didn’t mention that one but I thought it fit in tonally with some of the other films on the list.

[–]Mazurro 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

The definition of mindfuck movie = David Lynch.

Wow my favorite thing about this is the use of imdb and metacritic scores. These 2 are definitely the most reliable in my experience and Rotten tomatoes is utter shit (i never miss an opportunity to shit on RT). Thanks for this.

If anyone likes those kind of movies, I highly recommend also watching Bronson. It's the best movie ever made, Hardy played like a genius there. Also Dogville by Lars von Trier wasn't included here, A house built by Jack isn't included here, some other movies by Jon-Ho Bong (Parasite) aren't listed. Also a Wrestler by Aronofsky (actually, all movies made by him are great, except Black Swan, which also is mindfuck). I also recommend all movies by Nicolas Winding Refn (Bronson director).

Also, The Circle 2015 horror is kinda a good movie of this kind, as well as El hoyo from 2019.

My best mind fuck movies from the list: Cloverfield lane is great with its suspense. Is more a thriller/horror.
Eyes wide shut is a great documentary about the elite.
Vanilla sky, Ex machina, Primer, Inception, Looper, Se7en, Sixth sense, Vertigo, Groundhog day.
Still have to see Parasite

[–]JasonCarswell[S] 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

Fantastic recommendations!

[–]zyxzevn 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Outside the list, I would recommend:
Paycheck - a man does a job so secret that he needs to erase it from his brain. Then the trouble starts.
Minority report - about a society where everything is being monitored, even the future

[–]Yagihige 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Lacks some japanese movies like Tetsuo, Gozu or Visitor Q.

I'm sorry. I stopped reading at "Annihilation (2018)". I believe it is in the wrong category. It should be listed in "slap stick comedy". I found the most hilarious scene in the movie to be where they opened up the guys stomach like a window, and mugged at the camera like soyboys, while pointing out the eels churning about inside his gut like a cartoon tornado.

On the plus side, it is nice to see a variety of categories covered. But we are missing musicals. "The Apple (1980)", "Shock treatment (1981)" and "Pennies from Heaven (1981)" come to mind. And to a lesser degree, that horrid "Cats (2019)" adaptation. But for different, more meta based reasons.

[–]JasonCarswell[S] 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (3 children)

Yes, if it were my list, rather than clump them, I'd make a sortable wiki table and check off all genres and variable elements that apply.

[–]Questionable 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (2 children)

While trying to marathon watch "The Expendables" film series, I had to stop watching after the second film. As I had laughed myself raw, and realized I was literally losing my voice. I was truly mind fucked by those movies in the most peculiar way, and was losing touch with reality. For clarity, I was perfectly sober at the time. In that context, do those films count as mind fucked films?

[–]JasonCarswell[S] 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

More importantly, was it the director's intention to mindfuck you like that?

I'm now torrenting your 80s triplet. Since I haven't seen them I don't know if I should start listing off similar films, then, now, or from any time. For example, director Alan Parker of Pink Floyd's The Wall also did Birdy and other creative good films back then. Some in the list above are about crazy guys like A Beautiful Mind, but aren't a mindfuck like Jacob's Ladder so I don't know.

Also in the 80s/90s we would like to do drugs and watch mindfuck and/or movies about drugs. Eventually we became pros and sampled and edited all sorts of media together into our own long-play trippy montages of narratives and non-related psychedelic images/concepts - mixed tapes on VHS and cassette. A clip is not a movie though. Wish I still had my boxes of those tapes to upload to YouTube now - I'd be rich.

You may wish to torrent the Rifftrax version of "The Apple", as it is an odd film that's vision seems off the mark, and will only fuck with you after the fact, in a deep conspiracies way, as the director was on the mark, but misunderstood by viewers.

Shock treatment can be found as a double billed download with Rocky Horror, as it is a sequel. If you have any experience with therapy in the eighties, you will understand immediately what is being discussed.

As for Pennies from Heaven, it's a seemingly innocuous story with dark themes just under the surfaces about the nature of man.

More importantly, was it the director's intention to mindfuck you like that?

I believe it was the intent of the producers of the movie Cats to demoralize humanity, instilling in them a feeling of helplessness about their world, and a wish to kill themselves. I do not mean this as a joke. So, take that how you will.

Annihilation is good but it becomes better if you are very familiar with SCP. It's like Arcane and League of Legends. Arcane is good but it gets accentuated when you are familiar with League of Legends.

[–]JasonCarswell[S] 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (8 children)

It's okay. Not really much of a mindfuck, unless you're going to start including everything with a twist ending.

[–]RichardsonDavis 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (7 children)

Yeah, even for SCP standards that thing is meh. Still fun to watch. I just like it very much because it's just feels like old SCP. SCP was a writing collab that focuses on strange phnomena, it was great. Emphasis on was cause the libs got to it and now it's either novels or disrespect or sometimes both.

I'll stop now. I must be boring you. Well, I appreciate the opinion. You have a nice day now.

[–]JasonCarswell[S] 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (2 children)

Not boring. I had to find out what SCP and those shows are. I don't do games and don't watch much animation anymore if it's related to this: https://fictionhorizon.com/best-shows-like-arcane/

I started Arcane. Need to finish it.

[–]RichardsonDavis 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Enjoy Arcane!!!

[–]RichardsonDavis 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

The fact that the number one thing on that list is Sword Art Online is very sus. Arcane and Sword Art Online? What?

[–]JasonCarswell[S] 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (3 children)

What is SCP?

[–]RichardsonDavis 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (2 children)

A writing wiki which was a collaboration of a lot of people over the years. It was horror sci-fi and it was fantastic until 2018 when the SJWs took over. Not much woke stuff to be honest but most are now a far cry from what SCP was. Short, scary and to the point. Now it's just a novel or some shit.

I recommend the games if you want the greatest experience of it. Some old videos as well.

[–]JasonCarswell[S] 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

Good to know. TIL. Thanks for the outline.

I don't do games.

[–]RichardsonDavis 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

That's fine. Take care and have a nice day.
