The documentary was about these middle-aged men who had been in some kind of political youth group that killed a bunch of people, decades ago. The people making the documentary pretended they wanted to help these goons make a movie glorifying their past deeds, but instead they just filmed them talking bullshit and trying to make this (extremely cheesy) film.

While a handful of them had moments of self-awareness, the goons were mostly just wasting their lives away comparing themselves to American gangster films, feeding bullshit to the younger people in their little youth group, and so on. Oh, and they survive on shaking down local businesses for protection money, and running people off their land so rich people can build resorts and whatnot.

Why is every single person filmed here stupid? Well, the goons are stupid for falling for the "making a movie" ruse. Their victims are even stupider, because they are being conned by stupid people.

And the number of crimes admitted to, and even committed on camera, is mind-boggling, as is the pervasive lack of introspection observed from any Indonesian person captured on film.

It looked to me like they were just sleepwalking through life, and like Scarface represented the highest level of fulfillment or ambition that the brain of any of them could even imagine.
