Maybe. But that could also be semi-organic. Reddit's mechanism encourages groupthink and punishes dissent. So once large subs begin to swing a particular direction, encouraged by the mods who censor posts, it begins to kick out everyone else, like you say. That doesn't necessarily require paid activists. Albeit the admins and many of the mods are effectively working as paid activists to some extent.
