The concept of "health insurance" is a scam, and has always been.

True "insurance" is designed for catastrophic loss, paid for from the pool of people who are financially solid (no loss), on the premise that when they face a catastrophic loss, they will similarly be compensated.

"Health Insurance" very quickly moved away from catastrophic plans and came to mean "Health Care Reimbursement". Given that everyone is constantly using this, there is no pool of people who are "paying" but not "receiving". Instead, this is socialism. "The Rich"tm contribute disproportionately to this system, and the "disadvantaged"tm collect. But because everyone is collecting, all the time, the socialistic baseline is disguised.

As in all such systems, the people who benefit are neither those paying, nor those receiving the service, nor those providing the service. It's the assholes "behind the curtain" managing the system who are stealing us all blind. The most convenient label for this class of people is the "Medical Industrial Complex"; it includes Big Pharma management, Big Hospitals and Hospital Network management, and of course - always, always, always - governments at all levels.

We have allowed the creation of a massive healthcare bureaucracy, and it's going to collapse completely, but until it does, there is no "fixing it" that will make a damned bit of difference.

In the meantime, finding true quality medical treatment / advice is in truth still very much an individual endeavor. Each of us much search out the best we can find, and we are fools if we believe our "Insurance Network" is our ally in this process. Remember, the treatments they are providing are to THEIR best advantage. If that coincides with our best advantage, that's great. But we cannot assume these two imperatives are aligned most of the time.
