Especially if they can offer something that people afraid to come out see as a way to reconcile their sexuality with still being straight. Someone afraid to come out as homosexual may receive less backlash in some situations if they come out as a trans heterosexual instead. See Iran, which offers medical transition as an alternative to prison time for homosexual men.

I completely agree. It sure made it hard for me when I was trying to figure out my sexual orientation.

And it is sad that lesbian women who have only recently realized their sexual orientation will meet those disgusting sexists first, rather than a supportive community. I was one of those women, several years ago... glad I eventually found my way to saner waters.
