Possible solution leading to no more spam, AT ALL by HugodeCrevellier in SaidIt

What do people think (including u/magnora7) if we all volunteer to mod a single sub we care about that's getting worked overtime by the spam, and help clean up for a while until M7 can find more admins willing to help (and/or mods who truly want to manage the sub)?

I've got several subs of my own already, but they're pretty dead. I would be willing to take on one more temporarily for the sole purpose of removing spam. Don't even have to give me permissions to ban or use Automoderator, just remove posts.

It's the same amount of effort reporting that spam ... only instead, I would actually be removing it from the site for everyone else too. I can commit to logging in once a day and doing that.

There are a selection of subs that spammers are constantly posting in by NutterButterFlutter in SaidIt

It's easy for spammers to get around age/karma limits, that would only be a temporary measure.

I remember hearing last year or maybe the year before that there's some sort of issue with sitewide banning, like a table is full or something? I dunno if that's been resolved, which is why I was thinking using Automod instead. Once a spammer is identified, it's as easy as just adding their name to this rule:

author:
    name: ["username1", "username2"]
action: remove
action_reason: spambot

Simple idea for spam by Musky in SaidIt

[–]NutterButterFlutter 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

How's about blocking people generates a report too?

Sorry Musky, but that's not a good idea. What happens if I make multiple alt/bot accounts and block every person on this site? That creates report-spam and ties up the admins time cleaning it up.

reporting spam granted an automatic block that would work too.

Reports - even spam - are used for different reasons by individual users. As an example, I've reported users for spam in this sub but they aren't spamming the site generally. I don't want to block the users I reported. I just don't want them posting off-topic stuff in this sub. If my report blocks them, I won't ever see their genuine content elsewhere.

If you want to block a user, you can report and /or block from the same page. Look, I have the options right here on your post.

I'm sorry, but you're too far gone for me to help and/or feel OK about continuing a conversation. You're convinced there is a conspiracy and personal attack where there is none, and demand others disprove it instead of being open-minded to discussion and potential change of view.

There's no way for us to have a conversation in an atmosphere of "prove me wrong, I dare you".

The real issue was the fact he was attracting others to troll him back on my posts, which was a pointless distraction.

If that's what you really and truly believe ... pot, meet kettle. You're trying to do exactly the same.

Scholastic promotes "Read with Pride" book resources for LGBTQIA+ youth by NutterButterFlutter in LGBDropTheT

For those unfamiliar, "Scholastic" is a children's publishing company and they have regular book fairs for kids/tweens to buy their titles at lesser costs than retail.

I remember going to these book fairs and loving them. I was able to find historical fiction and wanted to learn more after reading, or browse through cartoon/comics and not feel serious.

The very last thing on my mind was sexuality/gender, that was icky. WTF is this LGBTQIA+ "representation"?

Bro, all you have to do is remove your sub(s) from s/all and put a disclaimer in the sidebar that mods remove non-relevant posts and comments. You don't even have to clarify further (although you can if you want). You don't have to fight against admins or sitewide rules, or the user who is antagonizing you. You can do what you want with 2 steps.

I personally don't agree with several users on this site and/or their language, but I appreciate that I and my subs are allowed to be here along with them and we can co-exist together. My personal feelings do not trump their right to free speech, and vice-versa. If certain users don't want to co-exist with me, you know what I do? Ignore them.

are you God around here?

LMAO, well yeah, he is "God". He created and runs this site. Accept the rules or leave.

Just a small note about your claim of M7 removing a comment because "someone calling you lazy". Here's the user profile so we can see what they actually said, it's the very first comment they made. Archive in case of deletion.

The allstupid magnora7 won't let the community self-manage, self-regulate, and self-govern. He forced me to give up my subs because of an arbitrary rule he made to keep me down. He's convinced I'd be guilty of becoming a power-mod despite no evidence of me doing any such thing. That's pre-crime despite not being guilty. The last straw was when he stole my subs because he's a shitty manager with a giant ego that needs to die.

Fuck magnora7.

Fuck Saddit.

Evolve beyond this shithole.

You are misinterpreting what happened and applying your personal feelings to it wrongly. The post was a question about Reddit and YouTube. Instead of raging that M7 did something, instead ask yourself ... why did a brand new user all of a sudden decide to spout off about SaidIt and M7 in an unrelated post? Hmmmm.

How do you feel about spam that's not the obvious kind - foreign bots linking to nonsense or shady URLs - but the more subtle kind - spamming the same post across multiple subs en-masse?

I'm seeing the latter happen more and more, and admins have had different opinions on that. Some see it as spam, and some see it as "any engagement is good engagement". Thought I should ask you directly.

To me it's sort of like what happened the the Iron Left a few years back, where they spammed their own content to take over the front page and drown out legitimate users of other subs. It's a little different though, because it's just a couple users that just mass-post the same thing, regardless of the actual intent of the sub.

How you can help with the recent spam attacks by magnora7 in SaidIt

[–]NutterButterFlutter 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Automoderator can do all of that, yeah. It doesn't ban, but it can remove posts and comments for a mod to manually review.

The downside is it can also be used maliciously against real users and content. And if there's no one actively moderating a sub, then both spam and real content just sits in a queue waiting for someone to handle it.

I saw it M7, I believe you. It's bad now, and it was a million times worse when you temporarily lifted it.

I remember scrolling through the front page of s/all and finding 1 legitimate post if I was lucky, and even my s/subscribed was maybe 3 or 4.

Sub mods have mostly abandoned their posts, and it's hard to find and keep admins around who will deal with cleaning up the mess sitewide for them. I feel for you. You made a place for all of us refugees and misfits to come together, and it's being shit on outside and in.

Thank you for continuing to fight and keep this site alive for us, I appreciate it.

Putting that into place sitewide would kill what little remains of SaidIt. Pretty sure M7 won't tell users "this is a free speech site, but only once you earn it".

It can be done by individual sub mods though, utilizing AutoMod. Which would be effective if sub mods would do it and then regularly check the modqueue.

Unfortunately, there's a very limited amount of users who want to be sub mods and clean the crap out. I mean, just look at the state of this sub, and it's run by admins.

There is a crazy amount of spam bots and trolls that attack this site constantly.

As annoying as it is to have to deal with the ramped-up Cloudflare shit, I appreciate it. Instead of spending 40 minutes reporting spam assholes and then leaving without doing anything else, I spend maybe 5 minutes, and then can move along to actually read what other real people are sharing.

If I spend 40 minutes reporting spam, I won't contribute to this site since I'm burned out. If I spend 5 minutes, and then can read what real people share, I may actually contribute in comments and help keep the site alive.

So I was just made a moderator of this Saidit sub and another. While I HATE the idea of "Reddit mods," I am not like them and just spent the last 20 minutes removing a year's worth of spam on here. Thank you for getting rid of the massive amounts of spam in this sub, really appreciate it!

While I understand your hesitation to remove Ike's contributions since it's engagement, what he shares has absolutely nothing to do with the purpose of this sub.

This sub is not meant to be a catch-all for user opinions and voices, that's s/whatever and many others. This sub is supposed to be about SaidIt as a website, where admins and users can contribute and engage together about it specifically.

I have no problem reading what Ike shares elsewhere, but it's not OK here. I am here looking for information about SaidIt in this sub, like the description says.

IMO you are making the wrong choice in this particular area. I will respect your decision to not do anything about it, but I will also say I think it's incorrect.

We welcome newcomers and like-minded people to our community, you just have to start in the comments instead of representing us immediately by sharing on our behalf.

This sub is in a downslope of engagement at the moment and that's OK. LGB "Drop The T" will persist and remain a space for our people, whether we are 5 or 50,000 strong.

You're a 20 day old account reacting to 6 month old comment on a nearly 2 year old post. Our sub has been here 4+ years and experienced quite a lot that you're not aware of. Your advice may be good-intentioned, but we (and even SaidIt as a whole) are well past it.
