I think it's straight or bisexual women who were incredibly turned off by the heterosexual relationships and included gender roles that they saw. So they convinced themselves they were lesbian as a way to avoid having to participate in that dynamic, and then after "transition" felt that they could be with men without being treated as "lesser"/inherently submissive/a possession etc.

It's a theory, anyway.
