I'd still be happy to assist with this if this is the route we go. I self-host a ton of web services and I'm a programmer by profession. That takes care of the know-how :)

As for hosting, I have some ideas. I'll leave it at that for now.

I am also a programmer but I have absolutely no experience with web hosting. (Unfortunately, I have a highly specialized skillset that is of no immediate use to this community's survival...)

I cannot spearhead this effort. But I'd be happy to help you out with this in any way I can!

Not sure whether my opinion is wanted as only an ally but I think this route is the best option, especially with help from known members with experience. As I understand, it would be something like ovarit but with the emphasis in LGB and dropping the t.

Ovarit is quite active, more than saidit, and an offsite might be easier for other LGBs to find and feel safe. You will never be able to rule out trolls but I suspect it would be easier to kick them out. I don't know, perhaps sone organisations like LGB alliance could be helpful?

Whatever you decide, I admire the work you all do and have done, and when wanted I will follow.

This is also my favorite option. Couple of thoughts/questions:

    • When you say "maintenance mode"-- do you mean that LGBDTT would stay private, or that you would make it public?

    • I strongly prefer Reddit/Saidit/Ovarit/whatever-style comments that are threaded and chained. Discord has a very limited version of this functionality, as well...

    • I'd also be willing to donate to help keep a privately-held site afloat.

    • I already responded to u/RipoffOfLove, but I'll reiterate here: I am not experienced in web hosting or development. I would be willing to help contribute to the effort of setting up and maintaining a site! I cannot be the person leading this effort, though.

    • Any in-depth discussion about technical details of a planned privately-held LGB site should probably not happen on Saidit, given that the Saidit Admin accounts can see literally everything that is posted on Saidit. Some potential options for platforms we could discuss and plan on, more openly: Discord, encrypted email... I don't know what the mods use but maybe NBF has some ideas for off-Saidit platforms to have meta planning ideas on.

    • I'd be willing to help create and moderate subgroups created on the new site. (Including a LGB Memes group, and a couple of others I've been meaning to create off and on over the last couple of years.)

Also, thank you for writing all this, NBF. You've laid out a lot of relevant considerations about the situation very thoughtfully.

I'm in favor of this option, under the circumstances that we can find a good host. I'm okay with both a Saidit style or a forum, I've used both.

There are some hosts out there that are willing to do more controversial sites (as long as you're no Kiwi Farms) and I've seen a few front ends for Reddit-like experience that are publicly available. Heck, you might be able to ask the owner of the rdrama website if we can use their's. Cringetopia did that.

Holy shit, I never heard of this.

I am so confused lol. Are these the "subreddits"? Why is there one just for Eevee...?

    [–]lunarstrain 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Yeah, basically. I think they're all user created. rDrama has a currency you can earn via commenting and posting, I'm pretty sure there's an option to create your own "hole" with enough of it but it's a steep price to prevent spam.

A lot of the stuff they have can be toggled off and altered via programming, so it won't have to be a copypaste.

    Thanks for outlining the options.

    • I'm predisposed to supporting this path here as I always thought DTT should ideally be on it's own site. I'm not even particularly plussed about Saidit admins or the userbase. It just seems like this is it's natural evolution from a humble sub-forum to a forum proper. The increased power and flexibility from getting to choose your own implementation of things, may just outweigh the drawbacks like the need for monetary input and the responsibility of dealing with any increased complexity of services. If the motivation is there, I say go for it.

    • I used to like the older style forums, but I've gotten so used to the reddit/saidit type and can't imagine spending much time in forums without threads. Flat forums feel so cripplingly backwards to use now(you basically need to quote/link everyone you reply to). Forum discussions are naturally branching and flow into increasingly specific and/or personal paths; And that's how they should be structured. Also, what do people think about upvotes/downvotes? They can be useful to filter for quality, but they can pre-emptively bias one against posts/comments.

That's a good point. I dunno, I find them useful. We could have the default sort option be set to "New" on a lot of subs.

I do really like the "insightful" and "fun" dual option the way Saidit has it. Especially with "fun" being worth only 1 point and insightful 2.

I guess whether it works it really depends on what kind of content it is.

It's an ok system. I've been thinking about whether it could also work for the proposed future forum. Voting fun brings those comments up in the ranks, so there's a good reason to use that unironically for fun(ny) comments, but there's less incentive to "downvote" someone in that way. Though I'm sure there are many users who still use it like that.

Could add a 3rd "screw you" button, but then people might use that as a joke.
