Okay, as a 30-year-old millennial who has millennial friends and colleagues on either side of my age AND who works with Gen Z adolescents for a living—yes and no.

Yes: There are some millennials who like pretending to be “queer” for clout. (Cue an acquaintance from university who was a regular, straight, white sorority girl when I knew her. She’s now “queer” despite only ever dating dudes. And, trust me, she never shuts up about it on her insta. This really leads me to believe it’s all for the likes.). I also see a whole lot of millennials falling for the non-binary fad. Likewise, Millennials are 100% the demographic who will believe and shout anything if they believe it’s for “LGBTQ+ rights.” Our generation is absolutely the one at fault for all the “gays wouldn’t have rights without transwomen of color” drivel.

No: A lot of the nonsense is coming from Zoomers. They 110% are the demographic that sees being LGB as a fashion statement. They’re here for the made up genders and definitions. Almost none of them are actually gay or bi, but they’ll sure as hell shout us down. They’ve never lived without a block button and don’t know how to exist with anyone with a different opinion. Almost none of them have ever experienced old school homophobia first hand, so they have zero perspective on what it’s actually like.

That’s good to know. I think the author’s in his 40s or older? Not sure, but I think there’s definitely a generational bias. I wonder how long zoomed will keep up with this stuff.
