Maybe it's just because I'm a Millennial, but I don't think this is Millennials and I'm a little frustrated by people continuing to blame Millenials for Gen Z's crazy bullshit. I know that generation lines are hazy and hard to define but Pew says that Millenials are 1981 - 1996, so the youngest Millennials would be 25. As far as I can tell, this stuff is mostly happening in colleges, which would be firmly the realm of Gen Z.

I don't doubt that more Millennials are saying they're LGBT than previous generations, because our generation was the one in which it really become socially acceptable to be gay, but most of the "it's a fad" stuff is surely 18 - 24 year olds, and younger.

These are the kids that I remember thinking about when I was in high school, coming up into elementary school when sports became a "nobody wins, everyone gets a participation trophy" affair. I remember thinking, "Wow, those kids are going to grow up and be so entitled and think they're so special with no good reason for it." And here we are.

It's both—I think the Millennials I have seen participate often show up as the TRA / enablers more than as the TQ+ trenders—but you're right, saddling Millennials with it exclusively is pretty inaccurate and I do think the Zoomers are more guilty at this point.

And here we are.

Yup.

I am borderline Gen Z/millennial, depending on who you ask (some definitions include up to or even past born in 2000). I've seen some of this behavior in people a few years older than me, too, not just my age and younger. That would be the youngest millennials. It's also worth keeping in mind that many people take 5-6 years to complete college, at least here in the US, and that community colleges have a wider range of ages-- so gender identity beliefs could get promoted to somewhat older students, as well.

That being said, I think my generation (Z) is definitely leading the charge...

Honestly, I think social media is more of a factor behind the transgender trend than anything else. People my age seem anxious and depressed, and turn to in-groups for reassurance and support-- which they/we struggle to find elsewhere. Then they see this in-group, the "LGBTQ community," a bunch of their friends are in it and everyone in this group seems like they're all positivity and wholesomeness, and are like, "Hey, I want in on that." Then it's as easy as talking yourself into considering that you might have gender dysphoria and BAM, you're a Valid and Accepted Trans Person. Support system crisis averted. *

I’m a millennial too (late 20s) but this really is our fault. Our generation started this shit and is the one that is perpetuating it in institutions outside of academia.

Honestly, I believe it has its roots/tentacles in Postmodern bullshit, like Judith Butler, and Michael Foucault.

I hate it. Millennial's will out grow it. The stench of Postmodernism will still linger after everyone has moved on.

Hasn't that been a thing for awhile? I remember back in school so many girls would claim to be bisexual because they liked kissing other girls for male attention and shit like that. None of them were actually bisexual.

Okay, as a 30-year-old millennial who has millennial friends and colleagues on either side of my age AND who works with Gen Z adolescents for a living—yes and no.

Yes: There are some millennials who like pretending to be “queer” for clout. (Cue an acquaintance from university who was a regular, straight, white sorority girl when I knew her. She’s now “queer” despite only ever dating dudes. And, trust me, she never shuts up about it on her insta. This really leads me to believe it’s all for the likes.). I also see a whole lot of millennials falling for the non-binary fad. Likewise, Millennials are 100% the demographic who will believe and shout anything if they believe it’s for “LGBTQ+ rights.” Our generation is absolutely the one at fault for all the “gays wouldn’t have rights without transwomen of color” drivel.

No: A lot of the nonsense is coming from Zoomers. They 110% are the demographic that sees being LGB as a fashion statement. They’re here for the made up genders and definitions. Almost none of them are actually gay or bi, but they’ll sure as hell shout us down. They’ve never lived without a block button and don’t know how to exist with anyone with a different opinion. Almost none of them have ever experienced old school homophobia first hand, so they have zero perspective on what it’s actually like.

That’s good to know. I think the author’s in his 40s or older? Not sure, but I think there’s definitely a generational bias. I wonder how long zoomed will keep up with this stuff.

Using Lindsay Ellis as the photo for that just seems so funny, I cannot stop laughing

Also, who's Lindsay Ellis?

She's the "Nostalgia Chick", or the female equivalent of the "Nostalgia Critic". They both used to do reviews of nostalgic old movies and tv shows. Heard she got cancelled over some stupid thing so I don't know what she's doing now.

Interesting, thanks for explaining.

Lindsay Ellis is a youtuber who makes media analysis videos. She's deep TRA, and made a video about JK Rowling that is going to age like milk. But she also occasionally has insightful takes, and I am kind of fascinated by her duality, as someone who is both smart and dumb.

To my mind, Peak Lindsay is this video about how Rent is bad, and it's characters are all a bunch of spoiled, entitled rich kids who think they're special and don't want to "play by the rules of fucking society". And the problem is not so much that these people are terrible (terrible people like this are a kind of human that exists, and its reasonable to depict that in fiction) but that the show validates their worldview and romanticizes it.

And I'd never thought about it much before. I just liked Rent because it had catchy songs, but once she points it out, she's clearly right, and I can't unsee it. BUT ALSO. Who does that description remind you of today, hmm? And she just seems so oblivious to that.

Ah, makes sense, thanks for explaining. I've seen a few other people with that same pattern.. It's amazing to watch the cognitive dissonance of someone who is otherwise smart and insightful.

Haven't seen Rent but now I'm curious to, with that characterization.

I just now realized, after several months, that your username is a reference to ATLA. And I've seen the show. Lol.
